What we know about Armenians in France, and what we don’t. There’s no exact figure, so below is a range of estimates. What is verified in the South: the Armenian parishes of Marseille, with addresses; the directory has 8 of them (checked 10 October 2026). We don’t know how many Armenians are in our chat: we don’t ask members about their nationality.

How many Armenians in France

There’s no exact official figure - France deliberately keeps no ethnic statistics. Various estimates put the country’s population of Armenian origin at around 400,000-600,000. Any number is an estimate, so treat the range as a guide, not a precise figure.

History: from 1915 to Marseille

Mass Armenian emigration to France began in 1915. People arrived by sea - and Marseille, the main Mediterranean port, became the first point of arrival. Many stayed; that is how Marseille’s large Armenian community took shape.

Over time Armenians spread out: Valence in the Rhône valley earned the nickname “Little Armenia”, and communities grew in Lyon (the Décines suburb) and Paris (including Alfortville). The best-known Frenchman of Armenian descent is the singer Charles Aznavour.

Where they live today

The main centres of Armenian France:

  • Marseille - the historic heart, the largest community in the South, churches and cultural organisations.
  • Valence - “Little Armenia”, a strong community tradition.
  • Lyon (Décines) - a large community, cultural centres.
  • Paris and Alfortville - the Paris area, with the biggest concentration.

More on life in Marseille is in our guide Marseille; the area around it is covered on the Bouches-du-Rhône department page.

The modern wave and Russian-speaking Armenians

Alongside the descendants of the old emigration, France has many Armenians who arrived in recent decades - from Armenia, Russia and other countries. For many of them Russian is the language of communication, so they naturally join Russian-speaking communities.

That’s why Marseille and the South of France are a meeting point: Armenians with different backgrounds come together, and Russian often becomes the common language.
