Alès: Russian-speaking community & moving to the Cévennes
Alès is the second-largest town in the Gard department, a former coal-mining hub at the foot of the Cévennes, ≈1.5 hours from Montpellier with a change. There's no dedicated Russian chat just for Alès, but there is a lively community, Vibe South of France (~400 people), that brings together residents of the Gard and the whole South of France. The proximity of Nîmes (≈32 min by TER) and the wild beauty of the Cévennes are the main draws for anyone seeking quiet without cutting themselves off from civilisation.
The Russian-speaking community in Alès
Alès is the second most populous town in the Gard department (≈46,125 residents per the INSEE 2023 census), the historic heart of Languedoc’s coal industry and, today, the gateway to the Cévennes National Park. It sits 40 km northwest of Nîmes and roughly 70 km from Montpellier: closer than it seems, yet not exactly a neighbouring suburb.
There’s no separate Russian-speaking chat for Alès — and we’ll be honest about it: there’s no point spinning up an empty group just for show. Everyone from our community across the South of France, Gard residents included, belongs to one lively chat — Vibe South of France (~400 people). That’s where people answer questions about housing, paperwork, work and doctors — and point you to whoever lives in Alès itself or nearby.
Just moved to Alès, or thinking about it? Write to the chat — mention that you’re in the Gard, or specifically in Alès. Someone among the members is bound to live in the area or know how things work locally. Montpellier is our “home base” (~400 people, most of the meet-ups), but Gard residents take an active part in the community’s life: it’s ≈32 minutes to Nîmes by train and ≈1.5 hours to Montpellier with a change.

Events and meet-ups
Alès doesn’t have a meet-up calendar of its own — the big gatherings (barbecues, hikes, yacht trips, picnics) mostly take place in Montpellier and along the coast. But the nature around Alès is a story in itself: the Cévennes, the gorges of the Gardon, waterfalls and volcanic plateaus give you reasons for walks and bike rides in any season. Outings like these are easy to put together with a small group by floating the idea in the chat. We won’t invent specific dates and formats: the calendar lives in the chat.
Relocation and paperwork in Alès
Alès is the sous-préfecture of the Alès district in the Gard department. But here’s an important nuance: the titre de séjour (residence permit) is not processed at the sous-préfecture d’Alès. All foreigners in the Gard department — whether they live in Alès, Nîmes, Bagnols-sur-Cèze or Vauvert — file their papers only at the Préfecture du Gard in Nîmes (10 avenue Feuchères, Nîmes) or online through the ANEF portal (administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr). For the general relocation process and a breakdown of all the abbreviations, see the Relocation section.

For OFII matters (visa validation, the medical exam, the CIR integration contract), Gard residents are served through the territorial directorate in Montpellier (130 rue de la Jasse de Maurin, 34000 Montpellier; tel. 04 99 77 25 50). Double-check the hours and current address on ofii.fr.
For our own: shops, church, doctors, translators
Orthodox parish. There’s no Russian Orthodox parish in Alès itself — and that’s the honest answer. The nearest option is the Romanian Orthodox parish in Nîmes (≈32 min by TER). The closest large Russian Orthodox parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate are in Nice and Cannes.
Russian groceries. No dedicated Eastern European shop could be found in Alès at the time of writing. The nearest verified address is in Nîmes, the Univermag shop (11 rue Vincent Faïta, 30000 Nîmes; tel. 04 66 64 68 75). Nîmes is ≈32 min away by TER. Links for online orders delivered across France are shared in the chat.
Russian-speaking doctors. Alès is a small town, and finding a Russian-speaking specialist right here isn’t easy. Here’s what works: filter by the language “Russe” on Doctolib and pick the specialty. Some specialists see patients in Nîmes or Montpellier. More in the Directory.
Sworn translators (Russian ↔ French). For the Gard (30), look up the list through the register of the Cour d’Appel de Nîmes (ca-nimes.justice.fr) or via the Ministère de la Justice. Contacts are shared in the chat too.
Neighbourhoods and housing
- Centre-Ville (the town centre)A renovated historic core: shops, a market, cafés. The most convenient place to live without a car.

- TamarisA peaceful residential district to the southwest with low-rise houses and green spaces; good for families with children.
- Faubourg du SoleilA historic faubourg with a village feel inside the town; sports facilities, undergoing renovation under the ANRU programme.
- Cévennes / Près Saint-JeanA large residential estate to the west; it underwent a major overhaul under the ANRU1 programme (2006–2020, ≈€69 million invested).

Alès is one of the most affordable towns in Occitanie for renting: the average rent is ≈€11/m² (SeLoger data, September 2025). A studio will cost roughly €360–480/month, a T2 around €490–580/month. For comparison: a similar T2 in Montpellier costs €200–300 more.
Without a French guarantor, the state guarantee Visale (visale.fr) opens the door — you arrange it online before signing the lease. Real listings and reviews of Alès are in the chat.
Alès for living and getting around
Alès is often underrated by people who only know it as an industrial town. In reality it’s a compact, lively centre set within a rich natural and historical frame.
Mine Témoin d’Alès (Chemin de la Cité Sainte-Marie, 30100 Alès; tel. 04 66 30 45 15) — a former training mine from 1945 with 700 metres of underground galleries: the largest visitable mining network in France. Price: adult €12, family ticket (2+2) — €35. Open February–November; in summer (July–August) without a break, 10:00–19:00.
Bambouseraie d’Anduze (~13 km from Alès): a 34-hectare exotic garden with bamboo, created in 1856. One of the most unusual parks in France.
Train à Vapeur des Cévennes (Anduze — Saint-Jean-du-Gard, 13 km): a steam train through the Gardon gorge, from April to October. You can make a stop at the Bambouseraie.
The Cévennes National Park is right nearby: hiking trails, canyons, the Mont Aigoual plateau, and villages with Romanesque churches.

How the chat helps
For a small town like Alès a living chat is especially valuable: there’s almost no local Russian-speaking infrastructure, yet the questions are the same. Where to buy buckwheat, which doctor in Nîmes speaks Russian, how to file your residence-permit papers online via ANEF, when the next community meet-up is — our own people answer, kindly and for free. Alès is in the Gard zone, and residents of the town are already in the chat.
Nearby in the South of France: Nîmes (≈32 min), Montpellier (≈1.5 h), Béziers (≈1.5 h), Perpignan (~2.5 h). The whole South is in one chat.
