Russian speakers in Besançon: church, shop, permits, rent

Yes, Besançon has addresses for anyone seeking something Russian: our directory lists a Romanian Orthodox church where some prayers are said in Russian too, the Sinéoka and Russe Market shops, and Russian at the university. Vibe South of France began in the South, but the chat is open to all of France.

Russian-speaking Besançon: what’s here

The short answer: Besançon doesn’t have many addresses of ours, and we won’t pretend it has more. Right now the directory for the city lists churches: 1; places that teach Russian: 1; shops with Slavic and Russian food: 2. What it does have is a check against a primary source for every entry: an up-to-date schedule for the church and opening hours for the shops.

Vibe South of France grew out of a chat for Russian speakers in Montpellier, and for now our meet-ups happen in the South. The chat itself has long had people from all over France, though. Post in the chat that you're in Besançon and ask who of ours is nearby: questions about the Doubs préfecture or housing are best put to people who’ve already been through it.

Besançon has 118,489 inhabitants (INSEE 2023 census) and its whole catchment area 283,269, and since 2017 the city has been growing slowly, by 0.4% a year. All the paperwork happens in two places: the préfecture and OFII share a building on avenue de la Gare d’Eau, and CAF and CPAM share an address on rue Denis-Papin. Two more things work differently here than in many cities: there’s no rent cap, and on Saturdays the trams and buses are free.

What the directory holds for Besançon now

The directory for Besançon currently lists churches: 1; places that teach Russian (the university): 1; shops with Slavic and Russian food: 2. There are no consulates in the city. A few more entries (churches and associations) are still waiting to be checked against a primary source, so they’re left out of this count and the lists below. We only show what we’ve checked ourselves.

Church

The parish of the Protection of the Mother of God and Saint George (Paroisse de la Protection-de-la-Mère-de-Dieu-et-Saint-Georges) worships in the Église Sainte-Thérèse, 1 rue du Général Brulard. It belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe, and the parish calls itself Franco-Romanian. Services are in French. But here’s the detail that makes it worth knowing: a few prayers are said in Romanian and in the languages of whoever has come to the service: Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Greek. The parish website’s home page even has a paragraph in Russian, saying the parish has existed and held services since 2005.

According to the parish calendar for October 2026, vespers are on Saturday at 18:30, and on Sunday matins at 9:00 and the liturgy at 10:00. The same calendar has catechism classes for children on 11 and 25 October. The parish feasts are on 1 October (the Protection) and 23 April (Saint George). Getting there is easy: the Polygone tram stop is right by the church.

We didn’t find a Russian-tradition parish in Besançon itself. The nearest one in our directory is in Belfort: the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, 15 rue du Berger, 90000 Belfort, Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate). Services are in French and follow the Julian calendar: by the October 2026 schedule, the vigil is on Saturday at 17:00, and on Sunday the Hours at 9:30 and the liturgy at 10:00. The parish publishes its schedule in Russian too, but the Russian version is updated late, so go by the French one. In May 2025 the parish marked its centenary.

Russian: a university, but no Saturday school

We didn’t find a Saturday Russian or Ukrainian school for children in Besançon, even though we looked for one specifically. If you know of a club, a group at a parish or a mum who gets children together on Saturdays, tell us in the chat: we’ll check it and add it.

For adults and students there’s Université Marie et Louis Pasteur (Université de Franche-Comté until 2025), UFR SLHS, 30 rue Mégevand. In Besançon’s LEA licence you pick two languages out of five: English, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian. Russian can be started from scratch, with a “Russe Débutant” course and the civilisation of Russian-speaking countries in the programme, and the ONISEP catalogue lists a separate track, “English - Russian - international business development”. The LEA department page that lists Russian among its languages carries a 2026-2027 academic year heading, but was last updated on 3 September 2025.

Where to buy Russian food in Besançon

Sinéoka, 89 Grande Rue. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 (closed on Sunday and Monday). The shop sums itself up as crafts, natural cosmetics and “Slavic groceries from Eastern and Northern Europe”. When we went through its catalogue, it had kvass, pickled cucumbers and loose tea. As a legal entity, the shop has been trading since January 2020.

Russe Market, 1 avenue de Bourgogne. Open every day from 11:00 to midnight, Sunday and Monday included, when Sinéoka is closed. We haven’t yet checked what this shop stocks.

Whether either shop has tvorog or pelmeni, we haven’t checked: ask in the chat who shops there. What to use instead of tvorog from a French supermarket is in our guide to tvorog, and online shops that deliver across France are in our directory of Russian shops.

Consulates: none in Besançon

Besançon has no consulates of its own, but it helps to know in advance which one you belong to.

The Consulate General of Russia in Strasbourg, 6 place Sébastien Brant, also covers the Doubs: its district is ten départements, among them 25 (Doubs), 39 (Jura), 70 (Haute-Saône) and 90 (Territoire de Belfort). Enquiries on consular matters Mon-Thu 11:00-14:00, visitors strictly by appointment. The phone number and website are on the page Russians in France.

Ukraine’s embassy and its consular section are in Paris, and since 9 July 2026 Ukraine has also had a consulate general in Lyon. The consular sections of Belarus and Kazakhstan are in Paris; the addresses are in our guide to Paris. Phone numbers and websites are on the pages Ukrainians in France and Post-Soviet diasporas in France.

Paperwork: préfecture, OFII, CAF, CPAM

This is where Besançon beats a lot of cities. The Doubs préfecture and OFII are in the same building, 3 avenue de la Gare d’Eau, and CAF and CPAM share 2 rue Denis-Papin. Four offices, two addresses, which saves a great deal of stress in the first few months.

The préfecture’s main rule: if you live in the Besançon or Pontarlier arrondissement, you book an online appointment on its website before any residence procedure. Applications that go through ANEF are filed online, and the préfecture says plainly that it will refuse a paper file unless it includes proof of a technical failure on the portal. If you can’t cope with ANEF on your own, there’s the point d’accueil numérique: same building, Mon-Fri 8:30-11:30, and you can walk in without an appointment. For a newcomer stuck on uploading documents, that’s probably the most useful line on this page. Residents of the Montbéliard arrondissement go to their own sous-préfecture.

The general procedure is set out in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation, CAF and APL and the Carte Vitale and the Sécu.

  • Doubs préfecture (Préfecture du Doubs)3 avenue de la Gare d'Eau, 25000 Besançon · Mon-Fri 8:30-11:30 and 13:30-16:00 · postal address: 8 bis rue Charles-Nodier, 25035 Besançon Cedex

If you live in the Besançon or Pontarlier arrondissement, every residence procedure needs an online appointment on the préfecture’s website. The point d’accueil numérique (help with ANEF) is in the same building, Mon-Fri 8:30-11:30, no appointment needed. A paper file for a procedure that is filed online will be refused unless it includes proof of a technical failure on the ANEF portal. The Montbéliard arrondissement is served by its own sous-préfecture.

Work in Besançon: who’s hiring

Work in Besançon depends little on the season. In the BESANCON pool only 16.3% of hires are seasonal (32.2% for France as a whole), while employers themselves rate almost half, 47.5%, as hard to fill (43.8% for France). There are 9,220 hires planned for 2026.

The figures come from France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey: in October-December 2025 employers were asked how many people they intend to hire over the year, seasonal and part-time posts included. These are intentions, not open vacancies. And the pool is much wider than the city: 274 communes, the whole area around Besançon, with Montbéliard counted separately.

OccupationHiring projectsOf which seasonal
Home helps and care workers (Aides à domicile et auxiliaires de vie)69015.9%
Office and building cleaners (Agents d’entretien de locaux)47014.9%
Care assistants (Aides-soignants)45013.3%
Artists: music, dance, shows (Artistes (musique, danse, spectacles))35057.1%
Activity and youth leaders (Professionnels de l’animation socioculturelle)3303.0%

Home helps and care workers are the hardest for employers to find: they rate 82.6% of these hires as hard to fill.

Unemployment in the Besançon employment area was 6.9% in Q2 2026 (INSEE, provisional figures), against 8.1% for the Doubs department and the same 8.1% for metropolitan France. Besançon itself has 73,112 jobs (2023 census): 46.5% in public administration, education, health and social work, 41.3% in trade, transport and services, 9.0% in industry.

You register at one of three France Travail agencies, Palente, Planoise or Temis; their addresses and hours are in the card above. Who is allowed to work and how a permit is obtained is covered in our guide working in France, where people get hired without French in its section on working without French, the free OFII language course in our guide French for a residence permit, and the SMIC and average pay in salaries in France. And to find out which of our people work in your field, ask in the chat.

Renting: what a flat costs in Besançon

On ANIL’s model (Q3 2025 listings), a flat in Besançon averages €12.88/m² a month, charges included, and a T1-T2 €14.83/m².

In the official “Carte des loyers 2025”, Besançon has a single line for the whole city. It is a model’s forecast, based on Q3 2025 listings, for a reference unfurnished flat with charges included: 52 m² for all flats and 37 m² for a T1-T2. Don’t read these figures as a median of deals; they’re closer to a guide to what landlords ask in their ads. The source is credited the way the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.

CommuneAll flats, €/m²T1-T2, €/m²
Besançon12.8814.83
École-Valentin14.0714.58
Miserey-Salines13.2014.10
Saint-Vit12.4114.42
Chalezeule12.1013.36

The rates are per month, charges included. In money terms (our own arithmetic: the rate times the reference size), a 52 m² flat in Besançon comes to roughly €670 a month and a 37 m² T1-T2 to roughly €549. The model’s spread is wide: for a T1-T2 the 95% interval runs from 11.92 to 18.46 €/m². It rests on 33,421 listings for all flats and 20,496 for T1-T2.

Interestingly, the suburbs here aren’t always cheaper: in École-Valentin and Miserey-Salines a flat costs more per metre than in Besançon itself. Another local quirk: larger flats (T3 and up) come out at €12.91/m² on the model, almost the same per metre as the city average.

For comparison, on the same model Besançon is cheaper than every city outside the South we have a guide for: Nantes (€14.50/m² for all flats), Strasbourg (15.57), Lille (15.76), Bordeaux (15.99), any arrondissement of Lyon and, needless to say, Paris, where the most affordable arrondissement, the 19th, costs €27.70/m². It also beats Grenoble (13.41).

Besançon has no rent control. The encadrement des loyers applies only in the communes on the official list on service-public, page F1314 (checked on 1 August 2026): Paris, Est Ensemble and Plaine Commune, Bordeaux, part of Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, Lille with Hellemmes and Lomme, Lyon with Villeurbanne, Montpellier and the Basque Country. Besançon isn’t on that list. We haven’t checked any other limits on rents. How to put together a rental file and what to do without a French guarantor is in our guide to renting in France.

Buying an apartment in Besançon: price per m² in 2025 sales

The median price of a flat in Besançon in 2025 was €2,206/m², about +3% on 2024 (€2,138/m²). Measured the same way, that is cheaper than Grenoble (2,487) and far cheaper than Lyon (4,454). Our sample is 1,710 sales, on DGFiP data (DVF, updated 12 October 2026), with the calculation ours: only ordinary sales (“Vente”) of a single flat, no new builds, not every sale in the city.

The median size is 63 m² and the median sale price €119,500; two separate medians. By rooms: one room €69,955 (28 m²), two rooms €107,000 (46 m²), three rooms €143,252 (65 m²). Four-room flats, oddly, sold for a lower median than three-room ones: €135,100 (75 m²). Houses: a median sale price of €277,900 over 205 sales (land included), with a median size of 107 m². The DVF price leaves out the agency’s commission unless the deed has the seller paying it; for taxes and the notaire, see our guide Buying property in France.

Social housing (HLM) in Besançon: applications and waiting times

On 31 December 2025 Besançon had 5,564 active applications for social housing, and during 2025 1,814 households got a home: about 3 applications for every one housed (3.2 across the CU Grand Besançon Métropole). Three quarters of those housed in the city (75%) waited less than a year, and across the metropole their average time in the queue was 9 months, the shortest of the 20 cities we looked at. Still, it is an average for people who have already moved in, not a promise to a new application.

The délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) in the Doubs is 12 months (18 only in Grand Pontarlier). After that you can turn to the DALO commission, but unless you have other grounds, you will also have to show that your current home doesn’t fit your needs or your means (notice to form cerfa 15036). You apply at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; the procedure and renewal are in our guide Social housing (HLM). Source: SNE (data.logement.gouv.fr), data as of 27 March 2026.

Getting around: Ginko, free Saturdays and trains

In short, from the SNCF Connect timetable for 21 October 2026 and the Ginko fares:

Around town on Saturdaysthe whole Ginko network-free

Besançon and its conurbation are served by the Ginko network, run by Keolis Besançon Mobilités for Grand Besançon Métropole. There’s no metro, but there are two tram lines: T1 from Hauts du Chazal to Chalezeule and T2 from Hauts du Chazal to Viotte station. There are about fifty bus lines, plus the on-demand Proxi lines and school services.

A PASS 1h ticket is valid for an hour with transfers and costs €1.40 on a rechargeable card (the card itself is €0.20). You’re charged the same if you tap a contactless bank card or your phone on the validator. Ten journeys are €13.00 and 24 hours (PASS 24h) €4.50. These are the prices as of 20 October 2026. You can top up your card with the bus driver, but only with coins, so it’s best not to board without a card.

The thing Besançon is known for: on Saturdays public transport is free for everyone. From 4:30 on Saturday until 2:30 on Sunday you can ride the tram, the bus and the intercity Ginko coaches without a ticket, and the park-and-ride car parks are free too. It’s been that way since 5 July 2025. Nantes, for instance, is free at weekends; here it’s just the one day, but the whole of it.

Trains. Besançon has two stations: Besançon Viotte in town and Besançon Franche-Comté TGV. Proxi TGV buses 1-4 run to the latter from Pôle Temis, Châtillon-le-Duc, Pirey and Palise.

By the SNCF Connect timetable for 21 October 2026, a direct TGV INOUI from Viotte to Paris (Gare de Lyon) takes 2 h 27 min - 2 h 35 min, calling at Franche-Comté TGV, Dijon and Montbard on the way. The catch is that there are only 3 direct trains a day each way; the rest involve a change and take about 2 h 42 min, so book the convenient direct one early. What awaits you in Paris, from consulates to Russian schools, is in our guide to Paris.

There’s no TGV from Besançon to Lyon, only the TER: 4 direct trains a day, 2 h 27 min - 2 h 39 min to Part-Dieu, and with a change the journey can stretch to 4 hours. Dijon is from 46 minutes away, with 29 journeys a day.

Alsace is harder. From Viotte the quickest option to Mulhouse is 1 h 55 min with one change, to Basel 2 h 24 min with two, and to Strasbourg 2 h 55 min with two changes. On the other hand, the DB SNCF Strasbourg - Lyon train calls at Besançon Franche-Comté TGV, so search for journeys from both stations in the app.

The airport. We didn’t find an official bus from any airport to Besançon: the transport pages of EuroAirport (Basel-Mulhouse) and Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport don’t mention Besançon. How our people got here from the airport is a question for the chat.

The climate, for anyone comparing it with the South. By the 1991-2020 normals at the Besançon station, the yearly average is 11.4 °C, with 2.9 °C in January and 20.2 °C in July. That’s exactly the same as Strasbourg, but with almost twice the rain: 1,157 mm a year against 635.7. There are 1,870 hours of sunshine, as in Nantes and more than in Paris (1,717). On average there are 14.5 hot days of 30 °C or more a year and about 58 days of frost.

Our people in Besançon and the chat

We haven’t held a meet-up in Besançon yet, and we haven’t counted how many chat members live here. What we do know is how these things start: the whole community grew out of a single barbecue near Montpellier on 31 May 2025, and we’ve got together more than twenty times since. Past and upcoming meet-ups are in Events, and you can see how our home base lives on the Montpellier page.

In the chat people usually talk about housing (guarantors, documents, listings), the préfecture and residence permits. If you’re in Besançon, introduce yourself and ask who’s nearby: how the Doubs préfecture booking went for people who applied recently, where to find tvorog, who goes to services in Belfort. And if you’d like to get our people in Besançon together, suggest a meet-up: that’s exactly how it all began for us, with one message.
