Béziers for our people: community, moving, housing
Béziers is an ancient town in southern Occitanie, an hour's drive from Montpellier: a place of its own on the map of the Russian-speaking South of France. Local members of the «Vibe South of France» chat are linked to a single community of ~400 people — and they're always glad to welcome a newcomer from Béziers or Cap d'Agde.
The Russian-speaking community in Béziers
Béziers is one of the oldest towns in the South of France: it is more than two thousand years old, and the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Nazaire is visible for many kilometres around. Today a little under 82,000 people live here, and among them are Russian-speaking residents who are linked to the «Vibe South of France» community.
Officially, Béziers is a sous-préfecture of the very same Hérault department (34) as Montpellier. That means our Telegram chat is geographically “at home” in Béziers too: 70 km, 40 minutes by train, and you’re at an evening barbecue near the centre of Montpellier. Or the other way round — friends from Montpellier can easily pop over to Béziers for the Feria or the Fonseranes locks.
Just moved and don’t know anyone yet? Write to the chat — you’ll get a warm welcome. People will tell you where to rent, which doctor to see, how to file your ANEF application. Your people are close by — even if at first it feels like there’s no one around.

Events and meet-ups
The community calendar is alive and lives in the chat, not here — exact dates and places are announced a few days ahead. But the kinds of things we do are easy to picture:
- The sea in summer. Valras-Plage — 15 minutes by car or bus. Cap d’Agde — about 25 km. Easy to head out as a group straight from Béziers.
- Walks along the Canal du Midi. The nine Fonseranes locks (Fonseranes) — a UNESCO site within the town. Beautiful at any time of year, perfect for a bike ride or a stroll with a picnic.
- The Feria de Béziers (August, usually around the 15th, 4–5 days). The highlight of the year. In 2025 it ran 13–17 August: bullfights in the arena, street parades, concerts, fun until dawn. During those days Béziers is packed to the brim — around a million people turn up. If you’re nearby, it’s impossible to miss.
- Get-togethers in bars and cultural outings.
The exact dates are always in the chat — we don’t make up a calendar.
Moving and paperwork in Béziers
Béziers is the sous-préfecture of the district of the same name within the Hérault department. That means it has its own sous-préfecture at Boulevard Édouard-Herriot, and this is where foreigners’ matters for the Béziers district are addressed.
There’s one important nuance, though: the final decisions on titres de séjour are made by the Préfecture de l’Hérault in Montpellier — the lead authority for the whole department (34). Most procedures are carried out through the ANEF portal (administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr). For the general process and the abbreviations spelled out, see the Relocation section; below are the real addresses for Béziers residents.

No appointment available? That’s a familiar situation all across France. For the Béziers district: keep checking for slots on ANEF and write to [email protected]. If the e-MERAUDE digital point at the sous-préfecture is temporarily closed, go to the equivalent point in Montpellier (a train leaves every hour). If need be, send your file by registered post (recommandé) with acknowledgement of receipt. People share what actually works in Hérault in the chat.
For our people: shops, church, doctors
Groceries. We couldn’t verify any dedicated Russian or Eastern European shops in Béziers itself — if you know of one that’s open, do write to the chat: this is exactly the kind of information the community gathers first-hand. The main verified option is a trip to Montpellier (40 minutes by TER), where several Eastern European shops operate. Buckwheat, kefir and fromage blanc can also be found in the local Carrefour or Lidl.
Orthodox church. There’s no permanent Orthodox parish in Béziers. The nearest is in Montpellier: the parish of Saint Helena and the Holy Cross (Archdiocese of Russian-tradition parishes in Western Europe), with services on the 1st–3rd Sundays of the month. For the exact schedule, see the parish website or check in the chat.
Russian-speaking doctors. A reliable approach is the Russe language filter on Doctolib plus the speciality you need: GP, paediatrician, gynaecologist. More on finding Russian-speaking doctors is in the Directory. Tried-and-tested names are shared in the chat (only with the doctors’ own consent).
Sworn translators (traducteurs assermentés) for the Russian↔French pair can be found in the list of experts of the Cour d’Appel de Montpellier — it serves the whole Hérault department, including Béziers.
Neighbourhoods and housing
Béziers is one of the most affordable towns in the South of France. Studio rent from 380–500 €/month, a T2 from 450–620 €/month (approximate, 2026). That’s noticeably cheaper than Montpellier, let alone Nice.
- Centre / Allées Paul RiquetThe heart of the town: a broad boulevard-promenade shaded by plane trees, boutiques, cafés. Much nicer since its renovation.
- Plateau des PoètesA picturesque listed park from 1867 next to the centre and the station; a bucolic garden with exotic trees and sculptures.
- Cathedral quarter (Saint-Nazaire)The historic centre on the hill around the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Nazaire. Touristy, with views over the river Orb. There is some run-down housing near the tourist lanes.
- Saint-JacquesThe old upper town; picturesque by day, calls for some caution in the evening. Renovation is under way under the NPNRU programme.
- Across the Orb (rive gauche)A quiet residential bank by the Canal du Midi. Calmer and a touch cheaper, handy for nature lovers and cyclists.
- La DevèzeA priority neighbourhood to the east, mostly social housing. Cheaper, but worth keeping the area's local character in mind.
Without a French guarantor, Visale (visale.fr) helps you secure a rental — a free state guarantee for those who can’t provide a physical co-signer. Put together a tidy file: proof of income, your last three rent receipts (or a bank statement), and a reference letter from your previous landlord. Real listings and fresh feedback on neighbourhoods are in the chat.
Béziers for living and exploring
Béziers is compact, affordable and well placed for exploring the south of Occitanie.

Airport. Béziers–Cap d’Agde (BZR), ≈11 km from the centre. Ryanair operates here: direct flights to London Stansted and Luton, Bristol, Brussels, Manchester, Edinburgh, Stockholm. For flights to CIS countries — the airports of Montpellier (MPL) and Marseille (MRS) are within an hour and a half.
The sea. Valras-Plage — ≈15 km to the west; Cap d’Agde, with its water park and large marina — ≈25 km to the east.
What’s worth seeing in Béziers:

- Saint-Nazaire cathedral — a Gothic fortress-cathedral on the hill above the river Orb, with 14th-century frescoes.
- Allées Paul Riquet — a grand boulevard with 220 plane trees, a theatre and fountains, the town’s main promenade since 1827.
- Plateau des Poètes — a listed park from 1867 in the centre, on France’s register of notable sites since 1995.
Day trips:
- Montpellier — ≈40–48 min by TER (43 trains a day); the administrative capital of Hérault and our community’s base.
- Narbonne — ≈20–25 min by train; the Gothic cathedral, Narbo Via (one of the finest Roman-era museums in France).
- Carcassonne — ≈1 h by train; a medieval UNESCO fortress.
- Agde and Cap d’Agde — ≈25 km by car; the sea, the marina, the water park.
- Sète — ≈1 h by train; the port, Mont Saint-Clair, the Étang de Thau with its oysters.
Free and inexpensive: a stroll along the Allées Paul Riquet, the Plateau des Poètes park, the banks of the Orb with a view of the cathedral, a bike ride along the Canal du Midi.
