Russian speakers in Bordeaux: church, school, consulates
Yes, Bordeaux has Russian-speaking addresses: we list St Seraphim of Sarov church and its Sunday school next door in Bruges, Lycée Camille Jullian's Russian section and Ukraine's and Moldova's honorary consulates. Vibe South of France began in the South, but the chat is open to all of France: say you're in Bordeaux.
Russian-speaking Bordeaux: what’s here
The short answer: yes, our people are here, it’s just that the main Russian address isn’t in the city itself. The church of Saint Seraphim of Sarov and its Sunday school are in Bruges and Le Bouscat, just over the city boundary (and yes, this Bruges is a Bordeaux suburb, not the Belgian city). Right now the directory for Bordeaux and the communes around it lists churches: 5; places for children and teenagers: 2; associations: 1; honorary consulates: 2. We checked the addresses against primary sources between 10 and 20 October 2026, and entries resting on one source are marked as such.
Vibe South of France grew out of a chat for Russian speakers in Montpellier, and for now our meet-ups happen in the South. The chat itself has long had people from all over France, though. Post in the chat that you're in Bordeaux and ask who of ours is nearby: questions about the Gironde préfecture or the lycée section are best put to people who’ve already been through it.
Bordeaux proper has 267,991 inhabitants (INSEE 2023 census), and the whole catchment area 1,426,278. The préfecture, OFII, CAF and CPAM are all in town. Two things set Bordeaux apart from many French cities: the commune itself has a rent cap, and since December 2025 an ordinary tram has run from the airport to the centre.

What the directory holds now
The directory for Bordeaux currently lists churches: 5 (of Russian tradition, in Bruges: 1); places where children and teenagers are taught in Russian (a Sunday school and a lycée international section): 2; associations: 1; honorary consulates: 2; shops with Russian food: 1. A few more entries, a Saturday school, the university and a couple of associations, are still waiting to be checked; they’re left out of this count and the lists below, so in reality there are more addresses.
Churches
Church of Saint Seraphim of Sarov (Église orthodoxe russe Saint-Séraphin-de-Sarov), 15 rue François-Xavier, 33520 Bruges. Moscow Patriarchate, Diocese of Chersonese. The parish calls itself a Bordeaux parish, but it stands in neighbouring Bruges: the diocese gives directions via exit 7 off the ring road (the rocade). It was registered as an association in 2003, and the purpose in the register is put plainly: to bring together Russian-speaking Orthodox believers and their families.
By the parish schedule for April 2026, the Sunday liturgy starts at 9:00, with confession and the Hours from 7:30. The website and notices are in Russian, with separate French versions, and the parish doesn’t say what language services are in. The schedule changes month by month, so check the parish website or ask in the chat before your first visit.
The other churches on the list belong to other traditions, and we don’t pass them off as Russian. The Greek Présentation-de-la-Vierge-au-Temple, 278 rue du Jardin Public (33300), Ecumenical Patriarchate; the parish has published its 2026 service calendar as an image, so look up the times there. The Romanian Saint-Joseph et Saint Jean Maximovici, 58-60 rue Paul Louis Lande (33000), serves in Romanian and French: by its June 2026 calendar, matins on Sunday at 8:30 and the liturgy at 10:00, and on Saturday a panikhida at 17:00 and vespers at 17:30. The Serbian Saints Martial et Eutrope, 35 rue Peyronnet (33800). And the Armenian Apostolic church of Saint-Nersès in Bègles, 125 rue Pierre Renaudel: in 2022 the Diocese of Bordeaux handed the building of the former Saint-François church over to the Armenian church of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
We haven’t yet confirmed from primary sources any services in Church Slavonic in Bordeaux. If you know where they serve in Slavonic, tell us in the chat: we’ll check it and add it.

The SIRUS Russian section and the Sunday school
Section internationale russe (SIRUS) at Lycée Camille Jullian, 29 rue de la Croix Blanche, 33000. It’s a state lycée, and it has had a Russian international section since September 2011: the lycée itself says it was the fourth in France to get one, and it also runs a European Russian section. SIRUS is meant for bilingual Russian-speaking pupils, with 4 hours of Russian language and literature and 4 hours of history and geography every week. According to the Ministry of Education, for the 2026/2027 school year the section runs from seconde and in the BFI (the French international baccalaureate).
The thing to know well in advance is the selection. In 2026 candidates were expected at the lycée on 7 May from 13:45, and the lycée updated its admissions page on 19 May. If your child is due to start lycée next year, keep an eye on the Camille Jullian website from the spring.
Sunday school of the Saint Seraphim of Sarov church, for children aged 5 to 12, in age groups. Classes aren’t held in the church but at the Maison de l’Autre, 19bis rue Formigé, Le Bouscat, five minutes away. The parish doesn’t publish the day and time; you sign up through the parish. It’s a school with real life in it: on 7 June 2026 its children sang two church chants at a hierarchical liturgy.
There is also Aprelik, a children’s centre for Russian language and culture in Mérignac. It doesn’t publish where its classes are held, so it isn’t in the list below: for details, ask in the chat.
- Catéchèse pour les enfants (single source). 19bis rue Formigé, 33110 Le Bouscat.
- Section internationale russe (SIRUS) - Lycée Camille Jullian - international section. 29 rue de la Croix Blanche, 33000 Bordeaux.
Other cities are in our directory of Russian schools. How to enrol a child in an ordinary French school or nursery is covered in our guide school and nursery in France.
Associations: Russian courses
The Cercle d’Études Russes in Bordeaux was registered in 1992 and teaches Russian to adults, mostly French speakers: groups of 3 to 6 people, an hour on Zoom or an hour and a half in person, with the first two levels online only. The 2026-2027 season began on 30 September. A good address if your French husband or wife wants to learn Russian.

Where to buy Russian food in Bordeaux
Shops in the directory for Bordeaux: 1. Nostalgie (épicerie russe et arménienne) is at 51 route de Toulouse, 33800. It appears under that name and address both in the SIRENE business register, where it has been registered since 2019, and on OpenStreetMap. We haven’t confirmed its hours or range yet, and the website on its map entry doesn’t open, so before your first trip ask in the chat what’s on the shelves at the moment. Other shops with Russian names turn up on the map too, but with no second source we leave them out.
You don’t have to hunt the shops for buckwheat: an ordinary supermarket has it, labelled “sarrasin grillé” or “kasha”. Which online shops send tvorog and pelmeni across France, and which only ship dry goods, is set out in our directory of Russian shops. Know a shop in Bordeaux with tvorog, pelmeni or kefir? Post it in the chat, and we’ll check it and add it.

Consulates in Bordeaux
Consulates in our directory for Bordeaux: 2, and all of them are honorary.
Ukraine’s honorary consulate: 186 rue Bernard Adour, 33200 Bordeaux, according to the French Foreign Ministry directory of September 2025. The hours on the Corps Consulaire de Bordeaux website are old (from 2022), so it’s best to phone ahead and check where and when they receive visitors; the number is on our page Ukrainians in France. Ukraine’s embassy with its consular section is in Paris, and the nearest consulate general is in Lyon, opened on 9 July 2026.
Moldova’s honorary consulate: 14 place des Quinconces, 33000 Bordeaux (French Foreign Ministry directory, September 2025). According to the Corps Consulaire de Bordeaux website, visits are by appointment only; ask where exactly you’ll be seen when you book. From 20 to 24 May 2026 Moldova’s consulate general in Nice held an outreach consular session in Bordeaux and carried out 80 consular acts. We found no announcement of the next visit.
The Russian consulate (the Russian Federation’s) and the consular sections of Belarus and Kazakhstan are in Paris; their addresses are in our guide to Paris. Phone numbers and websites for all the consulates are on the pages Ukrainians in France, Russians in France and Post-Soviet diasporas in France.
Paperwork: préfecture, OFII, CAF, CPAM
Everything a foreigner needs in the Gironde is in Bordeaux itself, so you won’t have to travel to another town. Permit applications are filed online, through ANEF, and a renewal goes in no earlier than 4 months and no later than 2 months before your document expires. The préfecture sees people by appointment only. If applying online doesn’t work for you, the préfecture has a “modalités alternatives” page with the fallback route. The general procedure is set out in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation, CAF and APL and the Carte Vitale and the Sécu.

Work in Bordeaux: who’s hiring
Bordeaux employers expect trouble with almost half of their hires. According to France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey, the BORDEAUX pool (97 communes: Bordeaux and its metropolitan area) has 41,170 hires planned for 2026, and employers themselves expect 48.4% of them to be hard to fill. Of the 12 big cities we collected figures for, only Nantes has a higher share (53.1%); for France it is 43.8%. Seasonal hires make up 19.5% (32.2% for France). The survey itself was carried out in October-December 2025: employers were asked how many people they intend to hire over the year, seasonal and part-time posts included, so these are plans, not open vacancies.
| Occupation | Hiring projects | Of which seasonal |
|---|---|---|
| Office and building cleaners (Agents d’entretien de locaux) | 1,990 | 19.6% |
| Kitchen assistants and all-round catering staff (Aides de cuisine et employés polyvalents de la restauration) | 1,810 | 17.1% |
| Vine growers and fruit growers (Viticulteurs, arboriculteurs) | 1,490 | 98.0% |
| Childminders, nursery assistants, foster carers and nannies (Assistants maternels, auxiliaires de puériculture, assistants familiaux et gardes à domicile) | 1,300 | 6.2% |
| Farm workers (Agriculteurs) | 1,280 | 96.9% |
The third and fifth lines are the vineyards and fields around the city: almost entirely seasonal work, not jobs in town.
Unemployment in the Gironde department was 8.0% in Q2 2026 (INSEE, provisional figures), against 8.1% for metropolitan France. Bordeaux has 211,721 jobs within the city (2023 census): 55.9% in trade, transport and services, 34.6% in public administration, education, health and social work.

Renting: what a flat costs in Bordeaux
On ANIL’s model (Q3 2025 listings), a flat in Bordeaux averages €15.99/m² a month, charges included, and a T1-T2 €18.54/m².
Bordeaux has a single line for the whole city in the official “Carte des loyers 2025”, with no breakdown by neighbourhood. It’s a model’s forecast based on Q3 2025 listings for a reference unfurnished flat with charges included: 52 m² for all flats and 37 m² for a T1-T2. Don’t read these figures as a median of deals; they’re closer to a guide to what landlords ask in their ads. The source is credited the way the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.
| Commune | All flats, €/m² | T1-T2, €/m² |
|---|---|---|
| Bordeaux | 15.99 | 18.54 |
| Talence | 15.56 | 18.40 |
| Le Bouscat | 15.44 | 18.24 |
| Pessac | 15.27 | 17.60 |
| Bruges | 14.83 | 16.90 |
| Mérignac | 14.80 | 17.84 |
| Bègles | 14.52 | 17.07 |
| Floirac | 14.21 | 16.30 |
| Cenon | 14.17 | 16.45 |
| Villenave-d’Ornon | 14.08 | 16.02 |
The rates are per month, charges included. In money terms (this part is our own arithmetic: the rate times the reference size), a 52 m² flat in Bordeaux comes to roughly €832 a month and a 37 m² T1-T2 to about €686. In Villenave-d’Ornon, the cheapest commune in the table, the same T1-T2 is around €593. The Bordeaux model rests on 84,641 listings, but its spread is wide: for a T1-T2 the 95% interval runs from 14.37 to 23.92 €/m².
For comparison, on the same model Bordeaux is almost level with Lille (15.76 and 18.09 €/m²), dearer than Strasbourg (15.57) and Nantes (14.50), roughly on a par with the most affordable arrondissements of Lyon (from 15.78), and 1.7 times cheaper than the most affordable arrondissement of Paris, the 19th (€27.70/m²).
Bordeaux has a rent cap, but only within the commune itself. The encadrement des loyers has applied since 15 July 2022 to leases signed or renewed up to 24 November 2026, bail mobilité included. The current order by the Gironde préfet was signed on 6 July 2026 and applies from 15 July to 24 November 2026 inclusive: on that day, as the order itself says, the experiment ends, and what happens next is up to the state. The city is split into 4 zones, and the rates depend on the number of rooms, the year of construction and whether the flat is let furnished. The cap doesn’t cover HLM social housing, flats under a conventionnement APL, housing under the 1948 law or holiday lets.
Two caveats. Mérignac, Talence, Pessac and the other neighbouring communes in the table aren’t covered: the cap applies only inside the commune of Bordeaux. And what gets compared with the cap is the base rent without charges (loyer de base hors charges, as the service-public page puts it), so you can’t set it directly against the figures in the table, which include charges. You can check your own flat on the service-public page F36487 and on the Gironde préfecture website. How to put together a rental file and what to do without a French guarantor is in our guide to renting in France.
Buying an apartment in Bordeaux: price per m² in 2025 sales
A square metre of flat in Bordeaux sold for a median €4,120 in 2025, 2.3% less than in 2024: of the 19 cities we calculated, that is the clearest fall. The calculation is ours, from 3,381 sales in DVF, the open database of actual property sales: only ordinary sales of a single flat, no new builds, and the most extreme 1% of prices left out. That makes it our sample, not every sale in the city. The median flat sold measured 52 m² and the median sale price was €203,000; two separate medians, not one “typical flat”. A one-room flat went for a median €114,635 (25 m²), a two-room flat for €185,000 (45 m²). The sample has 1,066 houses, at a median €478,500 including the land. The agency’s commission is, as a rule, not part of the DVF price. Source: DGFiP, DVF (geo-dvf, data.gouv.fr), updated 12 October 2026; the calculation is ours.
Social housing (HLM) in Bordeaux: applications and waiting times
On 31 December 2025 Bordeaux had 21,699 active applications for social housing, and during 2025 2,220 households got a home (ménages logés): about 10 applications for every one housed, against about 8 across Bordeaux Métropole. Across the metropole, applications of those housed were 21 months old on average, and in Bordeaux itself 41% of them moved in less than a year after applying. These figures describe people who already have a flat, not the wait a newcomer is promised.
The délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) in the Gironde is 36 months. Once it has passed you can turn to the DALO commission, although, under the notice to form cerfa 15036, the wait alone is not enough: you need to show that your current home doesn’t fit your needs or your means. You apply, and renew once a year, at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; who is eligible and which documents you need is in our guide Social housing (HLM): who can get it and how to apply. SNE data (data.logement.gouv.fr) as of 27 March 2026.
Getting around: tram F, the airport and trains
In short, from the SNCF Connect timetable for 21 October 2026 and the TBM fares:
| Where to | How | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris (Montparnasse) | OUIGO or TGV INOUI | from 2 h 08 min | - |
| Lyon | change at Massy TGV | from 4 h 22 min | - |
| Marseille (Saint-Charles) | direct Intercités | 6 h 26 min | - |
| BOD airport - centre | tram F | 35 min | €1.90 |
| BOD airport - Saint-Jean | tram F | 45 min | €1.90 |
| BOD airport - Saint-Jean | 30’Direct bus | 30 min | - |
| Around town | TBM ticket, one hour | - | €1.90 |
Bordeaux and its metropolis are served by the TBM network, run by Keolis Bordeaux Métropole Mobilités. There’s no metro, but there are six tram lines, A to F, plus buses. A ticket is valid for an hour, and within that hour you can change as often as you like: €1.90, or €2.10 from the driver, two tickets €3.40, ten journeys €15.70. A 24-hour pass costs €6.50, 48 hours €11, 72 hours €13.50 and a week €17.50. This is the TBM fare table in force since September 2025, still valid on 20.10.2026; it may be revised from 1 January 2027, so check infotbm after that.
Bordeaux-Mérignac airport (BOD). Since 6 December 2025 tram F has run out to it, and it’s the easiest way into town: 35 minutes to the centre (Hôtel de Ville), 45 to Saint-Jean station. Every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, every 15 on Sundays, from 5:00 to midnight, and until 1:00 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The ticket is the ordinary €1.90 one. If you’re rushing for a train, there’s a paid express bus, 30’Direct, to Saint-Jean in 30 minutes, but we haven’t confirmed its fare.
Trains. From Paris Montparnasse, the fastest train to Bordeaux takes 2 h 02 min (OUIGO) and TGV INOUI 2 h 03 min; on average the journey is 2 h 25 min. The other way is a touch longer, from 2 h 08 min. By the SNCF Connect timetable for 21 October 2026, there were 27 journeys that day, the first leaving Paris at 5:59 and the last at 20:37. What awaits at the other end is in our guide to Paris.
Lyon is harder: there’s no direct train. The fastest option, with a change at Massy TGV, takes 4 h 22 min, and a typical one about 5 h 10 min. To Marseille there’s a direct Intercités (not a TGV) via Agen, Montauban and Toulouse: 6 h 26 min to Saint-Charles, leaving at 6:10. TGV INOUI trains with a change take 6 h 27 min to 6 h 35 min. We have a guide to Marseille too.
The climate, for anyone comparing it with the South and the North. By the 1991-2020 normals at the Bordeaux-Mérignac station (it’s by the airport), the yearly average is 14.2 °C, with 7.1 °C in January and 21.7 °C in July. Sunshine comes to 2,070 hours a year, more than Paris (1,717) and Nantes (1,873), and there are 25.5 days on average when it reaches 30 °C. Rain isn’t scarce either: 924.9 mm a year, noticeably more than Nantes (819.5 mm). Frost comes on about 23 days a year.
Our people in Bordeaux and the chat
We haven’t held a meet-up in Bordeaux yet, and we haven’t counted how many chat members live here. What we do know is how these things start: the whole community grew out of a single barbecue near Montpellier on 31 May 2025, and we’ve got together more than twenty times since. All past and upcoming meet-ups are in Events, and you can see how our home base lives on the Montpellier page.
In the chat people usually talk about housing (guarantors, documents, listings), the préfecture and residence permits. If you’re in Bordeaux, introduce yourself and ask who’s nearby: how booking the Gironde préfecture went for people who applied recently, whether your rent fits under the cap, where to get tvorog. And if you’d like to get our people in Bordeaux together, suggest a meet-up: it all began for us with one message.
