Cabestany for our own: relocation, sea, Roussillon
Cabestany is an eastern suburb of Perpignan (≈10 km), home to the department's largest clinic and an old 12th-century church. The Russian-speaking community of the South of France is one single chat, 'Vibe South of France' (~400 people), based in Montpellier (≈155 km along the A9); it does have members from Perpignan and Cabestany, and the nearest dense Russian infrastructure is in Perpignan.
The Russian-speaking community in Cabestany
Cabestany is a compact town ≈10 km east of Perpignan, with which it has grown tightly together into the single Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole agglomeration. According to INSEE as of 1 January 2023, 10,465 people live here — one of the two Perpignan suburbs to pass the ten-thousand mark. Administratively it is an independent commune with its own town hall, its own Pablo Casals collège and even a France Travail agency right on chemin Saint-Gauderique. But for all the rest of the infrastructure — the préfecture, the Orthodox parish, Russian shops, sworn translators — you need to travel to Perpignan.
The Russian-speaking situation — honestly. There is no separate Cabestany or even Perpignan chat: all Russian speakers in the South of France — from Montpellier to Perpignan and beyond — are gathered in one community, ‘Vibe South of France’ (~400 people). The chat is based in Montpellier (~155 km along the A9, about 1.5 h); there are members from Perpignan and Cabestany, but not as many as in the big hubs. That’s the honest picture: Pyrénées-Orientales is built around its own major city, Perpignan, but it sits further from the bulk of the community than Montpellier.
Just moved to Cabestany or Perpignan? Join the chat and introduce yourself: say you’re in a Perpignan suburb. People will tell you who’s nearby, help with your first steps on documents, and explain how to find a Russian-speaking doctor in the region. The nearest dense Russian-speaking infrastructure is in Perpignan itself: the parish, two Russian shops, a sworn translator.

Events and meetups
Cabestany has no Russian-speaking events calendar of its own — and pretending it does would be dishonest. The gatherings and outings of ‘Vibe South of France’ take place above all in Montpellier: big barbecues for a hundred or more, picnics, yacht trips, hikes, horse rides. Getting there from Cabestany — about 1.5 h along the A9 by car, or by train from Perpignan.
For nearby outings the region offers a wonderful choice.
- The sea, 9–12 km away. Canet-en-Roussillon beach (Canet-plage, including Plage du Sardinal) with excellent-quality water — the closest access to the Mediterranean. A little further — the beaches of Saint-Cyprien (≈11 km). In summer Sankéo line 22 runs straight there as a shuttle.
- The Étang de Canet–Saint-Nazaire lagoon on the commune’s eastern edge — a protected Natura 2000 area of ≈1,100 ha. Reed beds, traditional fishermen’s sagnes huts, 139 bird species on the Africa–Europe migration route, open views of the snow-capped Canigou — a free walk five minutes from town.
- Collioure and the Côte Vermeille — ≈25 km south: an artists’ town set among picturesque coves, the birthplace of Matisse as a colourist. Banyuls-sur-Mer, Cerbère — further out, but doable the same day.
- Spain in an hour. Figueres (the Dalí museum) — ≈1 h 15 min, Girona — ≈1 h 30 min, Barcelona — ≈2 h.
- The Canigou massif — the Catalans’ emblem, with hiking routes climbing to 2,784 m above sea level. The ride up on the ‘Yellow Train’ (Train Jaune) through the Cerdanya is an attraction in itself.
Specific dates for meetups and trips always appear in the chat — we don’t invent them here.
Relocation and documents
Cabestany is an independent commune, but administratively it belongs to the Perpignan agglomeration and the Pyrénées-Orientales department (66). For the general relocation procedure and the meaning of the abbreviations OFII, ANEF, VLS-TS and CIR, see the Relocation section. Below are the real addresses that actually apply to Cabestany residents.
The most important thing: there is no OFII office in Perpignan itself or in department 66. Residents of Pyrénées-Orientales complete their long-stay visa validation and medical exam at the OFII territorial directorate in Montpellier (4 rue Jules-Ferry, tel. 04 99 77 25 50) — it covers five departments, including 66. The trip to Montpellier is mandatory: plan ahead.
The residence permit itself is processed through the Préfecture des Pyrénées-Orientales in Perpignan (≈10 km from Cabestany). Most procedures are first filed online via the ANEF portal (administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr); in-person reception is by appointment only.

For our own: church, shops, doctors, translators
Orthodox church. There is no Orthodox church in Cabestany. The nearest is the Parish of the Holy Spirit (Paroisse Saint-Esprit) of the Moscow Patriarchate, Korsun Diocese: rue Claude Monet, 66000 Perpignan (Moyen-Vernet quarter), ≈10 km. The rector is Archpriest Georges Egorov, tel. 06 07 97 61 66. The service schedule is not published publicly — phone or check with the chat members. Separately, Perpignan has a Romanian Orthodox parish of a different jurisdiction. The nearest large Russian cathedral with a regular liturgical rhythm is St. Nicholas in Nice (≈190 km).
Groceries. There is no specialised Russian shop in Cabestany. The multicultural supermarket ‘Les 5 Continents’ (9 avenue André-Ampère, Mas Guérido zone, tel. 04 68 67 59 07) helps out — more than 8,000 items of world cuisine, including Eastern European and Middle Eastern sections. Open Mon–Sat 9:00–19:00, closed Sunday. For a genuine Slavic store — only in Perpignan: Alenka (35 boulevard Félix Mercader) and Skazka (64 boulevard Mercader), both verified.
Doctors. Cabestany is home to a serious medical hub: the Médipôle Saint-Roch clinic (Elsan, avenue Ambroise-Croizat, 66330 Cabestany) — more than 120 specialist doctors, a round-the-clock emergency service (tel. 04 68 66 12 35, general — 04 28 63 10 10). It is the department’s largest private clinic. In addition — a Maison de Santé Pluriprofessionnelle (GPs, physiotherapists, nurses), booking via Doctolib. To find a Russian-speaking doctor: Doctolib.fr → the speciality you need → the ‘Langues parlées’ → ‘Russe’ filter. The presence of such a specialist can’t be guaranteed — but the filter returns real results across the region. Trusted names — in the chat.
Sworn translators. We didn’t find any sworn translators with an address in Cabestany. In Perpignan (≈10 km) the following are accredited on the Cour d’Appel de Montpellier list: Alexander Khorko (Khorko Alexander) — Russian/Ukrainian, Zhanar Akhmetova (Akhmetova Zhanar) — Russian/Kazakh. In Montpellier itself there are several more Russian/Ukrainian translators (Svetlana Arbona, Tatiana Manko-Coulon, Olga Kakaveshka). The full up-to-date register is on the Cour d’Appel de Montpellier website.
There is no Russian-speaking cultural association or Saturday school in Cabestany. The nearest are registered in Perpignan: France–Russie–C.E.I. des Pyrénées-Orientales and L’Énigme Russe. Look for a Russian Saturday school or Russian-language club through the community and the Perpignan associations.
For more on finding Russian-speaking professionals — see the Directory section.
Neighbourhoods and housing
- Centre / Vieux villageThe historic core around the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges (11th–12th c.) with the Romanesque tympanum by the 'Master of Cabestany'. The town hall is here too, on place des Droits-de-l'Homme.
- Mas GuéridoA large commercial zone at the entrance from the Perpignan side: hypermarkets, shops, the multicultural supermarket 'Les 5 Continents'. The terminus/hub for Sankéo buses.
- Orfila / Mas FerrerNew residential neighbourhoods to the west, near the border with Perpignan; served by Sankéo line 1 (the new Orfila terminus).
- Médipôle / quartier Ambroise-CroizatMedical hub: the Médipôle Saint-Roch polyclinic (Elsan) with round-the-clock emergency care — the department's largest private clinic.
Cabestany is not a self-standing rental market with stable pricing — de facto it is part of the Perpignan agglomeration. The 2025–2026 reference on the SeLoger portal: average rent ≈€13/m²/month. A T2 (≈40–45 m²) will run roughly €500–630/month depending on condition and neighbourhood. Studios to rent are rare. This is comparable to the Perpignan market, which is generally cheaper than Montpellier (median T2 ~€700–950).
Key pointers by area: Mas Guérido — a commercial zone with good transport access (Sankéo buses); Orfila / Mas Ferrer — new residential development with good infrastructure; Centre / Vieux village — historic atmosphere but limited choice; Médipôle — next to the largest clinic, handy for medical staff.
Without a French guarantor, Visale (visale.fr) unlocks the lease — a free state guarantee from Action Logement. A solid dossier includes: the last three payslips, an employment contract or letter from the employer, a bank statement. Real listings and advice on specific buildings — in the chat.
Cabestany for living and trips
Cabestany’s main cultural distinction is known far beyond Roussillon. The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges (11th–12th c.) in the historic centre holds a white-marble tympanum with a relief of the ‘Assumption of the Virgin’ — the work of an anonymous 12th-century sculptor whom art historians call the ‘Master of Cabestany’. This master created works across the whole ‘Latin crescent’ — from Catalonia to Tuscany — and remains one of the most significant figures of Romanesque sculpture in Southern Europe.
To get to know his legacy more deeply, it’s worth visiting the Centre de sculpture romane ‘Maître de Cabestany’ (Parc Guilhem, 66330 Cabestany, tel. 04 68 08 15 31): 1,100 m² of exhibition space, a documentation centre, workshops and lectures. Hours: Sept.–June — closed Mon, Tue–Sun 10:00–12:30 and 13:30–18:00; July–Aug. — daily.
The rest of the region’s riches are within easy reach:
- The Étang de Canet–Saint-Nazaire lagoon (Natura 2000, ≈1,100 ha, protected by the Conservatoire du littoral) right on the commune’s border: 139 bird species on the Africa–Europe migration route, traditional fishermen’s sagnes, a panoramic view of the snow-capped Canigou — the emblem of Catalan identity. Free entry, marked walking trails.
- The beaches of Canet-en-Roussillon (9–12 km, in summer a direct Sankéo 22 shuttle): a long sandy shore, ’excellent’ water-quality status, seasonal facilities. The neighbouring access point — Saint-Cyprien (≈11 km).
- Collioure and the Côte Vermeille (~25 km): picturesque rocky coves, a town with a history in the watercolours of Matisse and Picasso.
- The Yellow Train (Train Jaune) from Perpignan climbs to the Cerdanya and Mont-Louis — one of the most beautiful railway routes in France.
- Spain nearby: Figueres (the Dalí museum, ≈1 h 15 min), Girona with its medieval Jewish quarter (≈1 h 30 min), Barcelona-El Prat (BCN, ≈2 h).
Free: walks around the lagoon and its trails, viewing the façade of the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, fairs and the Fête de la Musique in Parc Guilhem.
Transport. The Sankéo network (Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole agglomeration) serves Cabestany with three lines. Line 1 is the key one: it runs through the Orfila and Mas Guérido neighbourhoods towards Perpignan (Carré d’Or) and on to Saint-Féliu-d’Avall. Line 8 (formerly No. 4) — the Cabestany/Catalogne route. Line 22 — a summer beach shuttle to Canet-plage. At peak times (before 9:00 and 16:30–18:00) buses run every 15 minutes, at other times — every 30 minutes. A single ticket — €1.30, 24 h Pass — €4.50, 7-day Pass — €14. You can buy on the bus, in the SNCF Connect app, or at Sankéo agencies. The nearest TGV and TER station is Perpignan (~10 km).
Schooling. Cabestany has around 9 educational institutions: several primary schools, the state collège Pablo Casals (6e–3e, with ULIS classes) and a lycée. All belong to the Académie de Montpellier. There is no Russian-language programme in the local schools — they are ordinary state institutions. For a Russian Saturday school — head to Perpignan.
How the chat helps
The nearest large community hub is Montpellier (~155 km along the A9). ‘Vibe South of France’ is one shared chat for the whole south, and it does have members from Perpignan and Cabestany. In the chat you can:
- Ask about available housing in Cabestany and the agglomeration right now;
- Get the contact of a Russian-speaking doctor in the region — the Doctolib filter helps, but live recommendations are more accurate;
- Find out the liturgy schedule at the Parish of the Holy Spirit in Perpignan;
- Get to grips with the OFII details in Montpellier and booking at the Préfecture 66;
- Find a travel companion for a trip to Collioure, the Canigou or Barcelona.
The people answering have been through all of it themselves. Free, kind, in your native language.
