Russian speakers in Le Mans (France): lycée, church, permits

Yes, Le Mans has addresses of its own: Russian at Lycée Montesquieu and a church in the Saint-Benoît crypt, with the préfecture, CAF and CPAM in town. A 52 m² flat costs about €612 a month; Paris is about 55 min by TGV. Vibe South of France began in the South, but our chat covers all of France: say you're in Le Mans.

The community hasn't met here yet. The nearest meetups: Toulouse, ≈500 km as the crow flies.

Russian-speaking Le Mans: what’s here

Le Mans has an Orthodox parish and Russian at a state lycée, and the Collège Léon Tolstoï keeps a Russian page on its website. The church isn’t a Russian one, though: the parish belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and serves in French, once a month, in the crypt of the Catholic church of Saint-Benoît. A Russian speaker is still welcome there, and the Lord’s Prayer is read in Church Slavonic among other languages.

Our directory for Le Mans lists churches: 1; and schools with Russian: 2, a state lycée and a collège.

Paperwork in Le Mans is mostly close at hand: the préfecture, CAF and CPAM are all here, and the CAF and the CPAM siège even share a building on avenue Bollée. The one trip out of town is to OFII, in Rezé near Nantes.

Vibe South of France was born in Montpellier, and all our meet-ups so far have been in the South. The chat, though, has long been shared by the whole of France, with 700+ members. Post in the chat that you're in Le Mans and ask which of ours live in Sarthe.

Le Mans has 146,249 inhabitants (INSEE 2023 census), slightly more than Tours, in 74,638 households. Since 2017 the city has grown by 0.4% a year, half from births and half from people moving in. Le Mans is the capital of the Sarthe département in the Pays de la Loire region.

Paperwork: the préfecture in the centre, OFII in Rezé

The Sarthe préfecture is on place Aristide-Briand. Its state directory entry has it open Mon-Thu 8:30-12:00 and 13:30-16:00, closing an hour earlier on Fridays. The phone line, 02 85 32 72 72, answers longer, from 8:00 to 18:00.

As everywhere in France, most permit applications in Sarthe are made online in ANEF. But the préfecture keeps its own list of exceptions, and one detail on it matters to a lot of people: for some types of permit the first application is sent by post, not booked as an appointment. Among them:

  • the VPF for personal and family ties (Article L. 423-23 CESEDA);
  • foreign nationals who arrived in France before the age of 13;
  • salarié and travailleur temporaire (on a CDD or CDI);
  • Talent for medical professions, au pair, British citizens under Brexit.

Changes of status go by post too, for example from a student permit to “recherche d’emploi / création d’entreprise” or to salarié. Write on the envelope: “Préfecture de la Sarthe DCL / BDSE (Bureau du droit au séjour des étrangers), Place Aristide Briand, 72000 Le Mans”. Renewals of these types and the collection of a finished permit are booked on rdv-prefecture; the links are in the préfecture’s entry below. The list comes from the préfecture page updated on 24 April 2026. If your case isn’t on it, your route is ANEF. The student permit isn’t among the exceptions, so, going by the list, it’s renewed online in ANEF, and only a change of status goes by post.

If the online application defeats you, there’s a digital help point (PAN) inside the préfecture: Mon-Thu 8:30-11:30 and 13:30-15:30, Friday until 14:30.

OFII for Le Mans is in Rezé, at 93 bis rue de la Commune de 1871. This is the Nantes directorate, covering five départements from Loire-Atlantique to Vendée. You go there when summoned, and the hours in the state directory date from 2024, so go by what your letter says.

The CAF and CPAM are both at 178 avenue Bollée, in the same building. The CAF opens at 8:15 (10:00 on Thursdays); the CPAM siège sees people by appointment only. The CPAM also has a desk at the hospital, in Hall Fontenoy on avenue Rubillard, again by appointment and only in the afternoon. CPAM appointments are booked through your ameli account or on 36 46.

What the BDSE is, how the OFII summons works and how to get a Carte Vitale, step by step, is in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation, CAF and APL and the Carte Vitale and Sécu.

Work in Le Mans: who’s hiring

Employers in the LE MANS employment pool plan to hire 11,860 people over 2026, which is 62% of all hiring plans in Sarthe (our own calculation). They call 43.1% of those hires hard to fill, close to the national figure (43.8%). Seasonal work is less common here: 26.0% against 32.2% for France. The figures come from France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey: employers’ intentions, not open vacancies.

OccupationHiring projectsHard to fill, by employers’ estimateSeasonal
Cleaners (Agents d’entretien de locaux)68067.6%11.8%
Kitchen assistants and all-round restaurant staff (Aides de cuisine et employés polyvalents de la restauration)60051.7%18.3%
Market gardeners and horticulturists (Maraîchers et horticulteurs)5100.0%100.0%
Nursing assistants (Aides-soignants)42042.9%26.2%
Home helps and carers (Aides à domicile et auxiliaires de vie)36038.9%11.1%

The market-gardening line is pure season: 100% of those hires are seasonal, and employers expect no trouble filling them. Cleaners and kitchen staff are the opposite: mostly hired for the long term, and hard to find, with employers rating more than half of those hires difficult. Just below the top five are two lines of 350 hires each: warehouse and order-picking staff, and nurses with midwives. Nurses have the highest share of hard-to-fill hires, 97.1%, which means almost every one. If you hold a medical diploma, look at our guide to recognition of qualifications: nursing is a regulated profession in France.

Unemployment in the Le Mans employment area in the second quarter of 2026 was 8.7% (INSEE, latest quarter provisional; DREETS Pays de la Loire table). That’s higher than mainland France (8.1%), Sarthe (8.1%) and the region (6.8%), and the rate rose by 0.8 points over the year.

How to get the right to work and register as a jobseeker is in our guide working in France; the SMIC and pay levels are in salaries in France. Jobs wanted and offered go in the community listings, and you can ask in the chat which of our people work in your field.

Housing: renting, buying and HLM

Renting in Le Mans is cheaper than in Tours, Angers and Rennes. On ANIL’s model a flat here costs €11.77/m² a month and a T1-T2 €13.55/m², which is about €612 for the reference 52 m² and about €501 for a 37 m² T1-T2 (our own arithmetic). The same model gives €702 and €572 in Tours, €757 and €613 in Angers, and €773 and €636 in Rennes.

Where the numbers come from: ANIL models what landlords ask in their ads for an unfurnished flat with charges included, on Q3 2025 data, and for Le Mans the model uses 25,658 listings. A signed lease can come out higher or lower. The source credit, as the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.

There’s no rent cap (encadrement des loyers) in Le Mans: the city isn’t on the service-public page F1314, checked on 1 August 2026. How to put a rental file together without a French guarantor is in our guide to renting in France.

Buying an apartment in Le Mans: 2025 sale prices

The median flat sale in 2025 was €1,935/m², almost unchanged from 2024 (€1,905). The middle half of the market ran from €1,490 to €2,353/m². We calculated this ourselves from 1,186 sales in DVF, the tax authority’s open database (DGFiP): ordinary sales of a single flat, no VEFA new builds and the most extreme 1% of prices cut on each side. A square metre in Le Mans costs roughly a third less than in Tours (€2,835).

The median sale price was €94,000 and the median floor area 56 m²; these are two separate medians, so don’t divide one by the other. A one-room flat sold at a median €61,600, a two-room at €90,000 and a three-room at €108,000.

And a detail the neighbouring cities don’t have: Le Mans sold almost as many houses as flats, 1,063 against 1,186. The median house went for €2,179/m² (€2,104 a year earlier), at a median price of €179,000 for 85 m². Taxes and notary fees are in our guide to property in France.

Social housing (HLM) in Le Mans

At the end of 2025 Le Mans had 7,777 active applications for social housing, and over 2025 1,791 households got a home: about 4 applications for each one housed (our own calculation). Two in three of those housed, 1,194 households, waited less than a year.

Across Le Mans Métropole 9,966 applications are in the queue, with an average age of 18 months, while the applications of those who got a home were 12 months old on average. That is exactly the délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) in Sarthe: 12 months. After it you can turn to the DALO commission, but the wait alone isn’t enough there: you also have to show why your current home doesn’t suit you. You apply at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; the steps are in our guide Social housing (HLM). SNE data as of 27.03.2026.

Studying in Le Mans: student housing and university

Le Mans Université has about 12,500 students, and that figure includes Laval (per the university’s website, October 2026). Le Mans itself has three faculties: law and economics; arts, languages and humanities; and the biggest, science and technology, with over 3,700 students. Close by are IUT Le Mans and the ENSIM engineering school, linked to the Polytech network, with acoustics and computer science. There’s no medical faculty: health courses run through a partnership with the health faculty in Angers. International students are looked after by the Bureau d’Accueil International (BAI), and the way in depends on the country you live in, not on your passport. Residents of the 75 countries on Campus France’s list must go through Études en France; of the countries our people come from, that means Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine. If you live in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan, the procedure is different: for year 1 of a licence you file a demande d’admission préalable (DAP) through the French embassy in your country of residence, for a master’s you go through Mon Master, and for years 2-3 and doctorates you apply directly to the university. DAP applications for 2027/2028 are accepted from 1 October to 15 December 2026. The student visa, proof of funds and tuition costs are covered in our guide Studying in France.

CROUS has two residences in Le Mans on tram line T1, with 921 rooms and studios between them (our own count from the CROUS Nantes Pays de la Loire pages). At Cité U’ Vaurouzé (16 bd Charles-Nicolle, Campus Ribay stop) a 9 m² room costs €263.66 a month for the 2026/2027 academic year and an 18 m² one €312.08, everything included. At Résidence U’ Bartholdi (16 avenue Bartholdi, Université stop) a 21 m² studio is €350.89 and a 31 m² T1 bis €450.04, and there you pay for electricity yourself. Grant holders get places first, but any student can apply, and it all starts with the Dossier social étudiant (DSE): without it you can’t apply for a room in a residence. If you’re looking for a flat in town, Action Logement’s free Visale guarantee is open to everyone aged 18 to 30 (and to salariés over 30, subject to conditions).

Just for us: church, schools, shops

A church in the Saint-Benoît crypt

The parish of Nativité du Christ serves in the crypt of the Saint-Benoît church, which the Catholic diocese of Sarthe has made available to it. The address is place Saint-Benoît, 72000 Le Mans, with no street number. According to the parish website you go in from rue Saint-Benoît, to the right of the church steps, and the nearest tram stop is Eperon on line T1.

The parish belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, in the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of France. Services are in French, with some prayers in the parishioners’ own languages: a 2016 parish page says the Lord’s Prayer is read in Greek, Church Slavonic, Romanian, Georgian and English. The liturgy is monthly, as the parish puts it in its news for November 2025, and in 2025 it announced the Christmas feast for the evening of 24 December in the same crypt. The 2025-2026 service calendar is a PDF on the parish website; check the next date there or ask in the chat.

Russian at school: a lycée and a collège

Russian in Le Mans is taught in ordinary state schools; there’s no separate Saturday school.

  • Lycée Montesquieu (1 rue Montesquieu): Russian is a second foreign language (LVB), alongside English, German and Spanish. The languages page on the lycée’s website was updated on 21 March 2025. Places are allocated the usual way (affectation).
  • Collège Léon Tolstoï (1 avenue de Madrid): yes, a collège named after Leo Tolstoy, and its website has a “Russe” page with material from the “Jasno ! A1 A2” textbook for the 5e, 4e and 3e. It was last edited in July 2023, though, so ask when you enrol whether the course runs in the 2025/2026 school year.

Shops and consulates

We found no Russian shop in Le Mans, although in October 2026 we searched the SIRENE state register for Sarthe and the web. There’s the Russian grocery Masha in Tours and Kavkaz Market in Nantes, and online shops that deliver are in our directory of Russian shops.

Consular business from Le Mans means Paris, about 55 minutes away on a direct TGV. The consular sections of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, with addresses, are in our guide to Paris; how to book and the phone numbers are on the pages Russians in France, Ukrainians in France and Post-Soviet diasporas in France.

Our people in Le Mans and the chat

According to the INSEE 2023 census, 950 of the 29,194 immigrants living in the Sarthe département (72) were born in Russia. This is a count by country of birth, not by language: children born in France, and people born abroad as French citizens, are not included. In this table INSEE does not list Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan separately: the first six are counted under “other European countries”, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan under “other Asian countries”. Source: INSEE, table IMG1B, 2023 census.

We haven’t met up in Sarthe yet, and in the chat export of 25 October 2026 fewer than three members name Le Mans as their city, new home or place they travel to. The community grew out of a single barbecue near Montpellier on 31 May 2025; everything since is in Events.

What is the chat good for here? Asking who has already posted a first application to the BDSE and how long the answer took, how the summons in Rezé went, who goes to the liturgy in the Saint-Benoît crypt and which school gave their child Russian. Those who’ve been through it know best, even if it was in the next city. And if you’d like to get our people together in Le Mans, suggest a meet-up: that’s how it all started for us.

The liturgy is monthly; check the next date on the parish website or in the chat.
Where can a child learn Russian in Le Mans?
In an ordinary school. At the state Lycée Montesquieu (1 rue Montesquieu) Russian is a second foreign language (LVB); the lycée’s languages page was updated in March 2025. The Collège Léon Tolstoï (1 avenue de Madrid) has a Russian page with material for the 5e, 4e and 3e, but it was last edited in July 2023, so ask about this year’s course when you enrol. We found no Saturday Russian school in Le Mans.
Is there a Russian shop in Le Mans?
We didn’t find one: in October 2026 we searched the SIRENE state register and the web. The neighbouring guides have the Russian grocery Masha in Tours (8 rue de Montbazon) and Kavkaz Market in Nantes (39 boulevard Victor Hugo); online shops that deliver are in our directory of Russian shops.
