Russian speakers in Nancy: churches, permits, housing, work

Yes, Nancy has Russian speakers: the Romanian parish, one of two Orthodox parishes on the quai de la Bataille, counts Russians and Ukrainians among its people, and the Université de Lorraine teaches Russian. Vibe South of France began in the South, but our chat is open to all of France: say you're in Nancy.

The community hasn't met here yet. The nearest meetups: Montpellier, ≈590 km as the crow flies.

Russian-speaking Nancy: what’s here

Nancy is the capital of the Meurthe-et-Moselle département in the Grand Est region, with 103,671 inhabitants at the INSEE 2023 census.

Two Orthodox parishes stand by the quai de la Bataille, one Romanian and one Serbian, and the Romanian one says outright on its website that Russians, Ukrainians and Moldovans are among its parishioners. You can study Russian at the university here, and the LEA degree (applied foreign languages) in English and Russian takes you from zero. What we didn’t find in the city itself is a Russian parish or a Russian school for children.

Our directory for Nancy lists churches: 2; universities with Russian: 2. It has no Russian shop for Nancy, and there are no consulates in the city either.

The paperwork has one quirk: the préfecture is here but OFII isn’t, so when you are summoned you go to Metz. CAF, CPAM and four France Travail agencies are all in town.

Vibe South of France grew out of a chat in Montpellier, and we haven’t held a meet-up in Lorraine yet. But the chat has long been shared by the whole of France: say in the chat that you're in Nancy and ask which of ours live nearby.

Paperwork: the préfecture by appointment only, OFII in Metz

The Meurthe-et-Moselle préfecture is at 6 rue Sainte-Catherine. On weekdays it is open 8:30-12:00 and 13:30-16:00, but only to people with an appointment. The state directory doesn’t mince words: anyone who arrives without one will not be seen. The address on rue Préfet-Claude-Érignac with “Cedex” on it is for post: you write there, you don’t go there.

In Nancy a permit starts at a computer. You apply online, and the préfecture calls you in once your file is complete; at that meeting, the préfecture says, you may be given a récépissé. For a renewal the law gives you a window: no earlier than 120 days and no later than 60 days before your permit runs out. Set a reminder on your phone the day you collect the card.

When the card is ready, the préfecture lets you know by SMS or letter, and collecting it is by appointment too: one appointment, one card, so each person books their own. Bring your old permit, a valid passport, the récépissé and the electronic tax stamps (timbres fiscaux dématérialisés) for the amount given in the SMS, bought in advance. For a student, according to F2231, a one-year carte étudiant costs €100 in stamps and a multi-year (pluriannuel) card €150 (€100 tax plus a €50 stamp); applying late adds another €180 (droit de visa de régularisation), and validating a VLS-TS costs €100.

One more line from the préfecture’s website: it deals only with foreign nationals who live in Meurthe-et-Moselle. If you live in a neighbouring département and work in Nancy, your own préfecture is the one you need.

The section for foreign nationals has a separate page for Ukrainians, with a title in French and Ukrainian, and a page on the language level and the civic exam (Niveau de langue et examen civique). If the online application won’t go through, help is in the same building: the PAN digital help point (same hours, 03 83 34 26 26) and France services Nancy-Préfecture (03 83 34 26 27).

There is no OFII in Nancy. The directorate that covers Nancy sits in Metz, at 2 rue Lafayette, and handles four départements at once: 54, 55, 57 and 88. Its state directory entry gives Mon-Fri 8:15-12:00 and 13:30-16:45, but the entry dates from August 2024, so take the time from your summons.

CAF is at 21 rue Saint-Lambert, open on weekdays until 16:00. CPAM is at 9 boulevard Joffre and works by appointment only: you book in your ameli account or on 36 46. Further along the same boulevard, at number 32, is Joffre, one of the four France Travail agencies. The other three are Majorelle, Cristallerie and Gentilly, all open 8:30-12:30.

How all this works step by step is in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation, CAF and APL and the Carte Vitale and Sécu.

Work in Nancy: who’s hiring

Employers in the NANCY employment pool plan 11,240 hires for 2026. That is almost two thirds of all hiring plans in the département, which come to 17,230 (our own calculation). Employers call 42.3% of these hires hard to fill, slightly fewer than across France (43.8%), and 22.3% are seasonal, against 32.2% nationally. The figures come from France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey, carried out in late 2025: they are intentions, not open vacancies.

OccupationHiring projectsHard to fill, by employers’ estimateSeasonal

Read the top row with care: activity leaders are the most sought-after, but almost three quarters of those hires are seasonal. For year-round work, home helps and carers are the more honest bet: only 11% of their hires are seasonal, and employers call almost two thirds of them hard to fill, which means they are short of people. Lower down the list come nursing assistants (390 hires) and nurses and midwives (240, of which 62.5% are hard to fill). If you have a medical qualification, start with our guide to recognition of qualifications: these are regulated professions.

Unemployment in the Nancy employment area in the second quarter of 2026 was 7.6%, 0.9 points higher than a year earlier. The département has the same figure, Grand Est 7.9% and mainland France 8.1% (DREETS Grand Est; figures for the latest quarter are provisional).

Who needs a work permit and how to register with France Travail is in our guide working in France; the minimum wage is in salaries in France.

Housing: renting, buying and HLM

On ANIL’s model a flat in Nancy costs €12.15/m² a month and a T1-T2 €14.11/m². In money that’s about €632 for the reference 52 m² and about €522 for a 37 m² T1-T2 (our own arithmetic). For comparison, the same model gives about €702 and €572 in Tours.

These aren’t the prices in signed leases but what landlords ask in their ads: ANIL models an unfurnished flat with charges included from Q3 2025 listings, drawing on 57,403 observations for Nancy. The credit line the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.

CommuneAll flats, €/m² a monthT1-T2, €/m² a month

Villers-lès-Nancy13.2313.90
Saint-Max12.1414.01

Malzéville11.96-
Maxéville11.75-
Jarville-la-Malgrange11.69-
Laxou11.0913.71

The table breaks the usual rule that the suburbs are cheaper. Villers-lès-Nancy is dearer than Nancy overall, yet its small flats are cheaper: €13.90/m² against €14.11. In Saint-Max and Vandœuvre a T1-T2 costs almost the same as in the city. Only Laxou saves you real money: a 52 m² flat there comes to about €577 (our own arithmetic). A dash means ANIL gives no separate T1-T2 estimate for that commune.

Nancy has no rent cap (encadrement des loyers). According to the service-public page F1314, checked on 1 August 2026, outside the Paris region it applies in Bordeaux, part of the Grenoble metropolitan area, Lille, Lyon with Villeurbanne, Montpellier and the Pays Basque. A rental file and a guarantor are covered in our guide to renting in France.

Buying an apartment in Nancy: 2025 sale prices

The median price of a flat sold in Nancy in 2025 was €2,266/m², almost unchanged from 2024 (€2,292). The middle half of the market runs from €1,877 to €2,680/m². We worked this out ourselves from 1,760 sales in the open DVF database (DGFiP): only ordinary sales of a single flat, no new builds, and the most extreme 1% of prices cut at both ends.

The median sale was €111,775 and the median flat measured 53 m²; these are two separate medians, so don’t divide one by the other. By number of rooms, a one-room flat sold at a median €65,000, a two-room at €96,000 and a three-room at €143,000. Few houses sell in Nancy itself, 179, at a median €2,526/m² and €271,650 for a house of about 100 m²; with a sample this small it’s better not to read a trend into it. Taxes and notary costs are in our guide to property in France.

Social housing (HLM) in Nancy

At the end of 2025 Nancy had 4,686 active applications for social housing, and over the year 879 households got a home: about five applications for each one housed (our own calculation). Of those housed, 605, almost seven in ten, had waited less than a year.

Across the Métropole du Grand Nancy 9,867 applications are in the queue, with an average age of 16 months. For those who got a home in 2025 it was 11 months. The délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) in Meurthe-et-Moselle is also 16 months, and the average wait of those housed sits well below it (our comparison of averages, not an assessment of your right to DALO). An expired wait alone isn’t enough for the DALO commission. You apply at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; the steps are in our guide Social housing (HLM). SNE data (data.logement.gouv.fr) as of 27.03.2026.

Studying in Nancy: student housing and university

The Université de Lorraine has 60,000 students, but that figure covers the whole university: Nancy, Metz and other towns (the university’s 2025 report). Its international students and doctoral candidates, around 9,500 a year, are also counted across all campuses. In Nancy itself, Campus Carnot (13 place Carnot) is home to the faculty of law, economics and management. The medical faculty (Faculté de Médecine, Maïeutique et métiers de la Santé) is in Vandœuvre, on Campus Brabois-Santé, and the engineering schools ENSAIA, ENSEM and ENSG are in Vandœuvre too, on Campus Brabois-Ingénierie. International students are welcomed by DRIE Accueil International, 91 avenue de la Libération: Mon-Fri 9:00-12:00 and 13:30-16:00, by appointment through the university website. How you come to study here depends on your country. According to the service-public table (F2231, checked 01.08.2026), students from 72 countries request the visa through Études en France, with pre-enrolment at the university, among them Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Belarus, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are not in the table, so for them it’s France-Visas. Check your own country in the table before you apply.

Crous Lorraine has 6 residences with 2,242 places in Nancy itself, and 14 residences with 5,013 places once you add Laxou, Maxéville, Vandœuvre and Villers (our own count from the Crous pages). On the rates from September 2026 a month costs from €160.36 for a 9 m² room in Saurupt to €561.53 for a 42 m² T1 bis for two in Notre-Dame de Lourdes, and that’s TCC, with all bills included. Grant holders get places first. Everything starts with the Dossier social étudiant (DSE) on messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr, but ticking “Je demande un logement” there is not yet an application: you choose residences afterwards on trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr. In the 2026 calendar the main phase ran from 5 May to 5 July and was closed to étudiants internationaux, while the additional phase, from 7 July to 30 October, let international students in from 13 July. For housing questions Crous receives people at 75 rue de Laxou, Mon-Fri 9:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:30. If you rent a flat in town, the free Visale guarantee from Action Logement covers unpaid rent and damage, and it’s open to everyone aged 18 to 30.

Just for us: churches, university, shops

Two Orthodox churches by the quai de la Bataille

The Romanian parish of Saints-Apôtres-Pierre-et-Paul serves in the Maringer chapel, the former chapel of the Villemin-Maringer-Fournier hospital, which has belonged to the parish since 2021. The entrance is at 2 rue du Professeur Alain Larcan, through the courtyard. The Romanian Metropolis’s directory gives a different address, 36 quai de la Bataille: that is another façade of the same hospital complex. A sat-nav will take you to the riverside façade, but you go in from the courtyard on rue Larcan.

According to the parish website (26.10.2026), there are matins every Sunday at 9:15 and the liturgy at 10:00, and vespers every Saturday at 18:00. Services are mostly in French and Romanian, with the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer read in several languages. On 19 September 2026 the chapel’s frescoes were consecrated, and the next day the parish opened its doors for the European Heritage Days. This is a parish of the Romanian Orthodox Church, not the Russian one.

The Serbian parish of Saint-Nicolas is next door, at 1 quai de la Bataille on the same embankment. Ask in the chat about the language of its services and its timetable; the latest diocesan news we found was an exhibition of church art in Vandœuvre in February 2025.

Nancy shares its airport with Metz: Metz-Nancy-Lorraine. In 2025 it handled 118,515 passengers, and about 98% of them flew on international routes (our own calculation from DGAC statistics). Domestic routes accounted for fewer than 2,500 people over the year (same source, our calculation). What awaits you in neighbouring Metz, from OFII to the parishes, is in our guide to Metz.

About the weather. Nancy has a real winter. At the Météo-France Nancy-Essey station (the former Essey airfield, in the commune of Tomblaine), the 1991-2020 normals give 11.0 °C on average over the year and 2.6 °C in January, with 63 nights a year below zero. July averages 20.0 °C, rainfall is 746 mm and sunshine 1,708 hours a year. The record low since records began in 1927 is -24.8 °C (21 February 1956), and the record high is 40.1 °C (24 July 2019). Bring a warm coat.

Our people in Nancy and the chat

According to the INSEE 2023 census, 784 of the 45,254 immigrants living in the Nancy employment zone (the city and the surrounding area from which people commute to it) were born in Russia. This is a count by country of birth, not by language: children born in France, and people born abroad as French citizens, are not included. In this table INSEE does not list Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan separately: the first six are counted under “other European countries”, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan under “other Asian countries”. We haven’t met up in Nancy yet, and in the chat export of 25 October 2026 fewer than three members name Nancy as their city, new home or place they travel to. The community began with a barbecue near Montpellier in May 2025, and today the chat has 700+ members from all over France. How it all grew is in Events.

In Nancy the chat is the place to ask how the appointment at the préfecture on rue Sainte-Catherine went, how long the summons from Metz takes, where flats come cheaper and who goes to the Sunday liturgy at the Maringer chapel. Once you find two or three of ours nearby, suggest a meet-up: that’s how it started for us.

Frequently asked questions

Are there Russians in Nancy?
Yes. The website of the Romanian parish of Saints-Apôtres-Pierre-et-Paul lists Russians, Ukrainians and Moldovans among its people, and the Université de Lorraine teaches Russian. We found no Russian parish and no Russian shop in the city. The INSEE 2023 census counts 784 people born in Russia in the Nancy employment zone: a count by country of birth, not language. Say in the Vibe South of France chat that you’re in Nancy and ask who’s nearby.
Where is the Orthodox church in Nancy?
Nancy has two Orthodox parishes, both by the quai de la Bataille. The Romanian Saints-Apôtres-Pierre-et-Paul serves in the Maringer chapel, entrance at 2 rue du Professeur Alain Larcan through the courtyard: Sunday matins 9:15, liturgy 10:00, Saturday vespers 18:00 (parish website, 26.10.2026), mostly in French and Romanian. The Serbian parish of Saint-Nicolas is at 1 quai de la Bataille; ask in the chat for its timetable. We found no Russian parish in the city.
Where do I go for a residence permit in Nancy?
To the Meurthe-et-Moselle préfecture, 6 rue Sainte-Catherine, by appointment only: people who turn up without one are not seen. You apply online first, the préfecture calls you in once the file is complete, and at that meeting you may be given a récépissé. A renewal goes in 120 to 60 days before the permit expires. The PAN in the same building helps with online applications, Mon-Fri 8:30-12:00 and 13:30-16:00.
Where is OFII for people living in Nancy?
In Metz. The OFII territorial directorate at 2 rue Lafayette covers four départements: 54, 55, 57 and 88. Its 2024 state directory entry gives Mon-Fri 8:15-12:00 and 13:30-16:45, phone 03 87 66 64 98. The entry is old, so go by the time and document list in your own summons.
How much does it cost to rent a flat in Nancy?
On ANIL’s model (Q3 2025 listings, charges included, unfurnished) a flat in Nancy costs €12.15/m² a month and a T1-T2 €14.11/m². That’s about €632 for the reference 52 m² and about €522 for a 37 m² T1-T2 (our own arithmetic). Laxou is cheaper on average, at €11.09/m². Nancy has no rent cap. Source: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.
Where can I learn Russian in Nancy?
