Russian-speaking Nantes: what’s here

The short answer: Nantes doesn’t have many addresses, but a good few of them keep a regular timetable. A choir on Tuesdays, a film club on Saturdays, a children’s school with its 2026/2027 fees published, a liturgy on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays. Right now the directory for Nantes and the communes nearby lists churches: 3; places that teach Russian: 2; associations: 1; shops: 1; consulates: 1. We checked every entry against a primary source.

Vibe South of France grew out of a chat for Russian speakers in Montpellier, and for now our meet-ups happen in the South. The chat stopped being purely southern a while ago, though; it has people from all over France. Post in the chat that you're in Nantes and ask who of ours is nearby.

Nantes proper has 327,734 inhabitants (INSEE 2023 census), and the whole catchment area 1,050,815. The préfecture, CAF and CPAM are in the city, but OFII is in neighbouring Rezé, which is worth knowing before your summons arrives. Rents here are noticeably lower than in Lyon, there’s no rent cap, and at weekends all city transport is free.

Churches

Our directory for Nantes and the nearby communes has 3 churches; 2 of them are Orthodox parishes of Russian tradition.

The Resurrection of Christ (Église orthodoxe de La Résurrection de Nantes et Pays de la Loire), 17 rue du Moulin des Carmes, 44300. Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate). The parish worships in the Saint-Jean-Bosco chapel, on a fixed schedule: the liturgy on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month at 10:00, the hours from 9:30, confession from 9:30 to 10:00 (parish website, October 2026). The liturgy is in French, with prayers and hymns in Church Slavonic, on the new calendar. Its parishioners, the parish itself says, are French, Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian and Serbian. It was registered as an association in 2021.

Saint Basil the Great and Saint Alexis (Église Saint-Basile), 53 boulevard de la Beaujoire, 44300. Ecumenical Patriarchate, vicariate of parishes of Russian tradition. According to the vicariate’s directory, the parish was founded in 1932 and worships in French, on the new calendar. It publishes service dates and times in its own calendar, last updated on 28 September 2026, so we don’t repeat them here: ask in the chat before your first visit.

Another church on the list is the Romanian parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Vertou (85 bis route de Nantes, 44120 Vertou), of the Romanian Orthodox Church. We don’t present it as Russian.

The Stoupen’ki Russian school and Russian at the university

Stoupen’ki (Ступеньки, “little steps”) is a Russian language school for bilingual children at the Maison de quartier de la Bottière, 147 route de Sainte-Luce, 44300. Toddlers aged 1-3 have the Umka group, from three there’s Stoupen’ki itself, and alongside it the Karandash drawing club, ballet and the Teatrushka children’s theatre. The school year runs from September to June: Stoupen’ki has 27 sessions of an hour and a half, Umka 27 sessions of an hour. Over the summer the school was on holiday until 13 September, and on 31 August 2026 it announced enrolment for new pupils.

The school publishes its prices itself, in a table called “Tarifs activités d’enfants 2026-2027”, in euros per school year:

Section1 child2 children3 children
Umka155280390
Stoupen’ki, groups 1-2155280390
Stoupen’ki, groups 3-8220400555
Karandash drawing110200275
Ballet155280390

On top of that comes a membership fee: €15 per child or €35 per family. If one child goes to the older Stoupen’ki groups and another to Umka or the younger groups, two children come to €340 and three to €500. The school’s website gives no days or times for the classes, so ask about them when you enrol.

For adults and students, Russian is taught at Nantes Université: in the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures (FLCE), department of Slavic and Far Eastern studies, on the campus du Tertre, Chemin de la Censive du Tertre. Russian is part of the LLCER licence, and according to the ONISEP catalogue there’s also an LEA English-Russian degree and a three-language LEA with Russian as the third language.

  • Stoupen'ki. 147 route de Sainte-Luce, 44300 Nantes.

Associations: a choir, films, courses

France-Russie-CEI Nantes was registered in 1995 and meets at the Pôle associatif Dupleix, room A, 14 rue de la Barbinais, 44100. Since 29 September 2026 a choir singing Russian and Ukrainian songs has met there on Tuesdays at 18:00. The film club shows Soviet and Russian films on Saturdays. In the autumn of 2026 the association was taking sign-ups for Russian courses.

Every season Nantes hosts the Univerciné à l’Est film festival, formerly called Univerciné russe. Its programme now covers cinema from the Caucasus, the Baltics, Eastern Europe and Central Asia; the next edition is scheduled for 9-14 March 2027, and FLCE at Nantes Université is among its partners.

The Loire-Atlantique préfecture, CAF and CPAM are in Nantes itself. OFII, although it’s called the Nantes directorate, sees people in Rezé, at 93 bis rue de la Commune de 1871: check the address against your summons and don’t go looking for it in Nantes. The préfecture sees people by appointment only, and titre de séjour applications, both first ones and renewals, go through ANEF if your type of permit is available there. The general procedure is set out in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation and CAF and APL.

Work in Nantes: who’s hiring

In the NANTES employment pool, 47 communes in all, employers plan to hire 33,500 people over 2026. And more than half of those hires, 53.1%, they themselves expect to be hard to fill: of the 12 big cities we compared, none has a higher share (the French average is 43.8%). Seasonal hires: 19.9%. The figures come from France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey, carried out in October-December 2025: employers’ intentions for the year, not today’s vacancies.

OccupationHiring projectsOf which seasonal
Office and building cleaners (Agents d’entretien de locaux)1,78015.7%
Kitchen assistants and all-round catering staff (Aides de cuisine et employés polyvalents de la restauration)1,20014.2%

Home helps and care workers (Aides à domicile et auxiliaires de vie)1,08016.7%
Activity and youth leaders (Professionnels de l’animation socioculturelle)1,03039.8%

Employers call 84.8% of cleaner hires hard to fill. Market gardening and horticulture jobs, for their part, are almost all seasonal, and employers expect 90.8% of those hires to be hard to fill.

Unemployment in the Nantes employment area was 6.7% in the second quarter of 2026 (INSEE, provisional figures), the lowest of the same 12 cities; for mainland France it was 8.1%. Nantes has 217,440 jobs within the city (2023 census): 59.5% in trade, transport and services, 31.1% in public administration, education, health and social work.

Renting: what a flat costs in Nantes

On ANIL’s model (Q3 2025 listings), a flat in Nantes averages €14.50/m² a month, charges included, and a T1-T2 €16.57/m². Unlike Paris and Lyon, Nantes has a single line for the whole city in the official “Carte des loyers 2025”. It is a model’s forecast, based on Q3 2025 listings, for a reference unfurnished flat with charges included: 52 m² for all flats and 37 m² for a T1-T2. Don’t read these figures as a median of deals; they’re closer to a guide to what landlords ask in their ads. The source is credited the way the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.

CommuneAll flats, €/m² a monthT1-T2, €/m² a month
Nantes14.5016.57
Rezé13.3515.55
Vertou13.4015.37
Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire13.5915.56
Saint-Herblain13.7415.62
Orvault13.7716.03

In money terms (our own arithmetic: the rate times the reference size), a 52 m² flat in Nantes comes to roughly €754 a month and a 37 m² T1-T2 to about €613. In the neighbouring communes a T1-T2 works out at roughly €570-595. For comparison, on this model even Lyon’s cheapest arrondissement is dearer than Nantes: a T1-T2 there starts at €18.43/m². The sample is large, with the model for Nantes drawing on 65,568 listings, and the 95% interval for a T1-T2 runs from 13.23 to 20.75 €/m²: any given flat can land on either side.

There’s no rent cap. The encadrement des loyers doesn’t apply in Nantes. According to the service-public page F1314 (checked on 1 August 2026), outside the Paris region it applies in Bordeaux, part of Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, Lille with Hellemmes and Lomme, Lyon with Villeurbanne, Montpellier and the Pays Basque. Nantes isn’t on that list (as of 20 October 2026). How to put together a rental file and what to do without a French guarantor is in our guide to renting in France.

Buying an apartment in Nantes: price per m² in 2025 sales

A square metre of flat in Nantes sold for a median €3,385 in 2025, 1.2% less than in 2024, and almost level with Montpellier (€3,387). That’s our own calculation from 3,923 sales in DVF, the open database of actual property sales: only ordinary sales of a single flat, no new builds, and the most extreme 1% of prices left out, so it is our sample, not every sale in the city. The median flat sold measured 54 m² and the median sale price was €165,000; two separate medians, not one “typical flat”. A one-room flat cost a median €92,500 (25 m²), a two-room flat €145,000 (45 m²). The sample has 989 houses, at a median €395,000 including the land. The agency’s commission is, as a rule, not part of the DVF price. Source: DGFiP, DVF (geo-dvf, data.gouv.fr), updated 12 October 2026; the calculation is ours.

Social housing (HLM) in Nantes: applications and waiting times

On 31 December 2025 Nantes had 22,026 active applications for social housing, and during 2025 2,757 households got a home (ménages logés): about 8 applications for every one housed. The wait is longer than that ratio suggests, though: across Nantes Métropole, applications of those housed were 30 months old on average, and in Nantes itself only one in four (25%) got a home within a year. These figures describe people who have already moved in, not the wait for a new application.

The délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) is 36 months within Nantes Métropole and 32 in the rest of the Loire-Atlantique. After that you can turn to the DALO commission, but, under the notice to form cerfa 15036, the wait alone is not enough: you also have to show that your current home doesn’t fit your needs or your means. You apply, and renew once a year, at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; eligibility and documents are in our guide Social housing (HLM): who can get it and how to apply. SNE data (data.logement.gouv.fr) as of 27 March 2026.

Our people in Nantes and the chat

We haven’t held a meet-up in Nantes yet, and we haven’t counted how many chat members live here. What we do know is how these things start: the whole community grew out of a single barbecue near Montpellier on 31 May 2025, and we’ve got together more than twenty times since. All past and upcoming meet-ups are in Events.

In the chat people usually talk about housing (guarantors, documents, listings), the préfecture and residence permits. If you’re in Nantes, introduce yourself and ask who’s nearby. Is there work in Nantes for Russian speakers?
There are no separate figures for Russian speakers: France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey counts occupations, not languages. In the NANTES pool (47 communes) employers plan to hire 33,500 people over 2026 and consider 53.1% of these hires hard to fill; the most sought-after are cleaners, kitchen assistants and seasonal market gardeners. These are intentions for the year, not open vacancies. Unemployment in the Nantes employment area was 6.7% in the second quarter of 2026 (INSEE, provisional figures). Who needs a work permit and how to register with France Travail is in our guide working in France, and to find out which of our people work in your field, ask in the chat.

No. The encadrement des loyers doesn’t apply in Nantes: on the service-public page F1314 (checked on 1 August 2026), the communes outside the Paris region where rents are capped are Bordeaux, part of Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, Lille with Hellemmes and Lomme, Lyon with Villeurbanne, Montpellier and the Pays Basque. Nantes isn’t on that list (as of 20 October 2026), so the rent in a lease is set by the market and by negotiation.
