Russian speakers in Troyes (France): church, shop, permits

Yes, Troyes has addresses of its own: a parish of Russian tradition in neighbouring Saint-André-les-Vergers, the Russian grocery Sibérie on rue Kléber and Russian at a lycée in Sainte-Savine. Vibe South of France started in the South, but our chat is open to all of France: say you're in Troyes.

The community hasn't met here yet. The nearest meetups: Montpellier, ≈520 km as the crow flies.

Russian-speaking Troyes: what’s here

Troyes has a parish of Russian tradition, a Russian grocery and Russian at a state lycée. The parish and the lycée, though, are in two neighbouring communes of the urban area, Saint-André-les-Vergers and Sainte-Savine, so those are the names to put into your sat nav.

Our directory for Troyes lists churches: 2, of which 2 are Orthodox parishes. Shops: 1; schools with Russian: 1. No consulates.

The paperwork splits like this: the préfecture, CAF, CPAM and France Travail are in Troyes, while OFII and naturalisation are in Reims, which is already the next département, Marne.

Vibe South of France began as a chat in Montpellier, and for now our meet-ups are in the South. But there’s one chat for all of France, with 700+ members, and you’ll find people from Champagne there too. Post in the chat that you're in Troyes and ask which of ours live nearby.

Troyes itself is small and very dense: 62,088 inhabitants (INSEE 2023 census) and 4,703.6 people per km², more crowded than Tours or Le Mans. The population barely moves, up 0.1% a year since 2017. Troyes is the capital of the Aube département in the Grand Est region.

Paperwork: the préfecture books you in, OFII is in Reims

The Aube préfecture is at 2 rue Pierre-Labonde, open on weekdays from 8:30 to 11:30. What’s unusual here is how you get an appointment. The immigration service sees people by appointment only, and it sets the appointment itself: according to the préfecture’s page, updated on 7 May 2026, “in most cases” you get a phone call, an email or a letter. So keep an eye on your phone and your inbox, spam folder included.

The préfecture also gives a short checklist for the day, and it saves a lot of nerves:

  • bring a blue or black pen;
  • come without anyone accompanying you;
  • arrive on time: there’s no need to be more than 5 minutes early.

A renewal through ANEF is filed between the 120th and the 60th day before the permit expires. Miss that window and the préfecture charges a taxe de retard. The PAN helps with online applications: you call it on the préfecture’s number, 03 25 42 35 00, on working days from 14:00 to 16:00. The national ANEF contact centre is 0 806 001 620. Permit fees changed on 1 May 2026; the amounts are on the préfecture’s website.

OFII and naturalisation are in Reims. The OFII directorate at 2 rue du Grand-Credo covers four départements, Aube among them. The préfecture sends family reunification applications there too, and citizenship files are examined by the naturalisation platform in Reims. More about the city is in our guide to Reims.

The Aube CAF at 32 rue Coulommière is open Mon-Fri 8:30-16:00, and its entry says outright that you can come with or without an appointment. On the same street, at number 24, is the France Travail agency. The CPAM receives on avenue des Lombards, preferably by appointment, which you book in your ameli account or on 36 46. The CPAM siège on rue Étienne-Pédron is open on weekdays too.

The general procedure is in our guides to the titre de séjour, OFII and visa validation, family reunification, French citizenship and CAF and APL.

Work in Troyes: who’s hiring

The job market in Troyes leans heavily on the seasons. Employers in the TROYES employment pool plan to hire 9,390 people over 2026, and 57.9% of those hires are seasonal, nearly twice the French figure (32.2%). Employers call 40.8% of hires hard to fill. This is France Travail’s BMO 2026 survey: intentions for the year, not vacancies.

OccupationHiring projectsHard to fill, by employers’ estimateSeasonal
Vine and fruit growing (Viticulteurs, arboriculteurs)3,03029.7%99.0%
Farm workers (Agriculteurs)72050.0%93.1%
Home helps and carers (Aides à domicile et auxiliaires de vie)36047.2%0.0%
Café and restaurant waiting staff (Serveurs de cafés restaurants)34038.2%82.4%
Cooks (Cuisiniers)33057.6%51.5%

The first line alone makes up almost a third of all hiring plans in the pool (≈32%, our own calculation), and 99% of those hires are seasonal. Add the farm workers and you get more than 3,700 hiring plans, nearly all of them temporary. If you need work for the whole year, look at the third line: 360 home helps and carers wanted, and not a single seasonal hire among them. Of the top five, cooks are the hardest to hire, at 57.6%. Further down the list are 210 telesales staff, again with no seasonal hiring at all.

Unemployment in the Troyes employment area in the second quarter of 2026 was 10.0%, and 10.1% for the Aube département (INSEE, latest quarter provisional; DREETS Grand Est table). That’s well above mainland France (8.1%) and Grand Est (7.9%), and over the year the rate in the area rose by 0.9 points.

Who can work and how is in our guide working in France; the minimum wage is in salaries in France. We don’t post job ads, but you can ask in the chat who has done seasonal work in Aube.

Housing: renting, buying and HLM

Renting in Troyes is noticeably cheaper than in Reims. On ANIL’s model a flat costs €11.11/m² a month and a T1-T2 €13.68/m²: about €578 for the reference 52 m² and about €506 for a 37 m² T1-T2 (our own arithmetic). The same model gives Reims €681 and €556.

ANIL’s model reflects asking prices in ads, not signed leases: an unfurnished flat, charges included, Q3 2025 listings, of which there are 18,840 for Troyes. The source credit, as the dataset requires: “Estimations ANIL, à partir des données du Groupe SeLoger et de leboncoin”.

Troyes has no encadrement des loyers (rent cap): the city isn’t on the list on the service-public page F1314 (checked on 1 August 2026). The rental file, guarantor and Visale are in our guide to renting in France.

Buying an apartment in Troyes: 2025 sale prices

The median flat sale in Troyes in 2025 was €1,567/m², almost unchanged from 2024 (€1,615). The middle half of the market ran from €1,274 to €1,990/m². We worked this out from 871 sales in DVF, the tax authority’s open database (DGFiP), keeping only ordinary sales of a single flat, no new builds, and dropping the most extreme 1% of prices on each side. A square metre here is roughly 40% cheaper than in Reims (€2,633, our own calculation).

The median sale price was €80,000 and the median floor area 56 m²; these are separate medians. A one-room flat sold at a median €58,000, a two-room at €75,600, a three-room at €86,920 and a four-room at €110,625. 212 houses were sold, at a median €1,890/m², exactly the same as a year before, and a median house price of €160,476 for 88 m². Taxes and notary fees are in our guide to property in France.

Social housing (HLM) in Troyes

At the end of 2025 Troyes had 4,528 active applications, and over 2025 1,288 households got a home: about 3.5 applications for each one housed (our own calculation). And 85% of those housed, 1,090 households, waited less than a year.

Across Troyes Champagne Métropole the applications of those who got a home were 6 months old on average, half the figure for the Le Mans metropolitan area (12). The délai anormalement long (the official “abnormally long wait”) in the Troyes urban area is 18 months (12 in the rest of Aube). After that you can go to the DALO commission, but the wait alone isn’t enough: you also have to show that your current home doesn’t suit you. You apply at demande-logement-social.gouv.fr; the steps are in our guide Social housing (HLM). SNE data as of 27.03.2026.

Studying in Troyes: student housing and university

The engineering university UTT (Université de technologie de Troyes) has about 3,000 students, 26% of them international (per UTT, January 2026). It offers 7 engineering specialisms, master’s programmes, three licences professionnelles and a Bachelor. Besides UTT, Troyes has the IUT de Troyes and the campus des Comtes de Champagne, with a school of design next to it; we found no figures for these. How you apply depends not on your citizenship but on the country you live in now. Residents of the 75 countries on Campus France’s list go through Études en France, and of our people’s countries that means Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine. From Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan you apply differently: for year 1 of a licence, a demande d’admission préalable (DAP) through the French embassy in your country of residence; for a master’s, the Mon Master platform; for years 2-3 and doctorates, straight to the university. The DAP window for 2027/2028 runs from 1 October to 15 December 2026. Visas and tuition costs are in our guide Studying in France.

CROUS de Reims has three residences in the Troyes urban area, and at all of them the price already includes water, electricity, heating and internet. Geoffroy de Villehardouin is on the Technopole de l’Aube campus in Rosières-près-Troyes, between UTT and IUT: a confort room is €269 a month, a studette €346. At Léonard de Vinci (24 place Léonard-de-Vinci, by the campus des Chartreux) a studio is €373 and a T2 for one €568, while two sharing a T2 pay €283 each. The only one in the centre of Troyes itself is Les Courtines on rue de la Petite-Courtine: studios at €365 and T1 bis flats at €384, in the maison de l’étudiant building, opposite the Resto U’. Prices are from the CROUS pages on 28.10.2026, which give neither the tariff year nor the number of places. Grant holders get housing first, but any student can apply, through the Dossier social étudiant (DSE). For a private flat there’s the free Visale guarantee: for everyone aged 18 to 30, and for salariés over 30 subject to conditions.

Just for us: church, grocery, lycée

A church of Russian tradition, in Saint-André-les-Vergers

The parish of Saint-Nicolas is at 25 avenue du Maréchal Leclerc, 10120 Saint-André-les-Vergers, in the Troyes urban area. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate). By the archdiocese’s entry, edited on 18 March 2026, services are in French and Church Slavonic, on the new calendar and once a month.

The building has a story of its own. According to a 2022 archdiocese publication it’s a former eighteenth-century barn on the grounds of the Saint-Frobert diocesan centre: the Catholic diocese handed it to the parish on a 99-year lease, restoration took almost ten years, and the church was consecrated on 22 May 2022.

We have no timetable for 2026. The most recent parish feast we found a record of was on 7-8 December 2024. So before you go, ask in the chat when the next service is.

The Romanian parish of Saint-Georges serves in Troyes itself, at 109 avenue Édouard Herriot, in the parish hall of the Catholic parish of Saint-Bruno; by the Romanian Metropolis’s list (undated), on three Sundays a month. It belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church, and we don’t present it as a Russian parish.

The Russian grocery Sibérie

Sibérie is at 9 rue Kléber, 10000 Troyes. The L’Ours Magazine directory (2023) calls it the Russian grocery of Troyes. In the SIRENE business register the shop is listed as active (October 2026), with the business at this address opened on 4 January 2017, and OpenStreetMap puts the shop at the same spot. We haven’t been in ourselves, so ask in the chat when it’s open before you go.

Russian at school: a lycée in Sainte-Savine

At the Lycée polyvalent Édouard Herriot (8 rue La Maladière, 10300 Sainte-Savine) Russian is an optional subject, the option russe, in seconde générale. “Option Russe” sits in the menu of the lycée’s website, whose home page was edited on 7 April 2026, and its ONISEP entry (updated in May 2026) lists Russian among the lycée’s languages. There’s no international Russian section; it’s an ordinary option within the school curriculum.

We found no children’s Saturday school in Troyes with a confirmed timetable. A Russian-speaking association in the urban area advertises Russian classes for children and adults, but we have no current timetable or venue. If you go there or run your own group, tell us in the chat and we’ll check it and add it to the directory of Russian schools. Enrolling in an ordinary school is covered in our guide school and nursery in France.

Consulates

There are no consulates in Troyes. The consular sections of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan are in Paris, an hour and a half away by train; the addresses are in our guide to Paris, and phone numbers and how to book are on the pages Russians in France, Ukrainians in France and Post-Soviet diasporas in France.

Paris (Paris Est) - Troyeslast evening train (22:12)≈3 h 10 min

Trains to Troyes leave from the Gare de l’Est, not the Gare de Lyon. On the SNCF Connect timetable for Wednesday 28 October 2026, all 17 of the day’s journeys were direct regional trains, most of them taking 1 h 30 - 1 h 39 min with stops at Nogent-sur-Seine and Romilly-sur-Seine. The first leaves at 5:42, and the last, at 22:12, drags on for about 3 h 10 min. That’s one day’s timetable; check it in the app closer to your trip.

Live in Troyes but work for a private company in Paris? Your employer must refund half of your season ticket: 50% of the second-class fare by the shortest route, once a month, while single tickets aren’t refunded (Code du travail, article L3261-2, per the service-public F19846 page checked on 25 February 2026; if you work less than half-time, it’s pro rata to your hours).

Around the city and the urban area you take TCAT buses, and the fare is lower than in Le Mans (€1.50) or Brest (€1.70): an hour of travel with transfers for €1.35, ten journeys for €11.50, a day ticket for €4.20. Fares haven’t changed since 18 July 2019. A ticket from the driver costs €2.00 and is sold for cash only, so keep some change on you.

About the weather. The Météo-France station is in the neighbouring commune of Barberey-Saint-Sulpice. The 1991-2020 normals give 11.3 °C on average over the year, and January is cold, about 3.6 °C. On average there are 62 frosty nights a year, and about two nights below −10 °C. In summer around 17 days reach 30 °C. Rainfall is 645 mm, with 1,851 hours of sunshine. A proper warm coat is a real need here. The climate sheet is in the sources at the bottom.

Our people in Troyes and the chat

We haven’t held a meet-up in Champagne yet, and in the chat export of 25 October 2026 fewer than three members name Troyes as their city, new home or place they travel to. The community started with a single barbecue near Montpellier on 31 May 2025; what came next is in Events.

In Troyes the chat is handy for asking when the next service in Saint-André-les-Vergers is, whether Sibérie opens on Mondays, how long people waited for the call from the immigration service and how long the trip to the OFII summons in Reims takes. Some of us have already been through it, even if in another city. Say you’re in Troyes, and if you’d like to get our people together, suggest a meet-up.

The train stops at Nogent-sur-Seine and Romilly-sur-Seine. That’s one day’s timetable: check yours in the app.
Is the Vibe South of France chat for me if I live in Troyes?
Yes, the Vibe South of France chat is for people in Troyes too: we started in Montpellier, but the chat has one link for all of France and 700+ members. Say you’re in Troyes and ask about the call from the immigration service, the OFII summons to Reims, housing or seasonal work: plenty of us have been through it. We haven’t met up in Aube yet; suggest a meet-up, that’s how it all started for us. Joining is free.
