Hyères for our community: relocation, islands, life

Hyères is the oldest resort on the French Riviera: Queen Victoria wintered here, Robert Louis Stevenson called it the happiest place of his life, and ferries to the protected Îles d'Or — Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Île du Levant — leave from the town's own port. Russian speakers in Hyères are part of the Vibe South of France community.

The Russian-speaking community in Hyères

Hyères tends to get overshadowed by its flashier neighbours, Nice and Cannes — which is precisely why it appeals to people who are actually moving here rather than posing for Instagram. This is the oldest resort on the French Riviera, pre-dating Nice’s glory years by decades. The British Victorians adored it: in the winter of 1892, Queen Victoria herself stayed at the Hôtel de l’Albion and liked it so much she came back the following year. In 1883–1884, Robert Louis Stevenson lived here while writing A Child’s Garden of Verses and The Black Arrow, later describing Hyères as the only place where he had ever been truly happy.

The town still earns its old nickname, Hyères-les-Palmiers. The palms that line every boulevard were planted during the Victorian craze for wintering in the south, and they have never left.

For someone relocating today, the real draws are practical: Toulon-Hyères airport is 3 km from the town centre (fewer than 15 minutes by bus), rents are meaningfully lower than Nice, and the protected Îles d’Or are a 15-minute ferry ride away. Among the larger coastal towns of the Var, Hyères is among the most underrated.

There is no dedicated Russian expat association in Hyères, but the town has Russian-speaking residents who are part of the broader Vibe South of France Telegram community — about 400 people spread across Provence, Occitanie, and the Côte d’Azur.

The islands — what makes Hyères unique

No other French mainland town puts you this close to a protected wilderness. From the Hyères ferry terminal, 15 minutes on the water takes you somewhere that belongs to a different world.

Porquerolles is the largest of the Îles d’Or, known for white-sand beaches, umbrella pine forests, and a total ban on private cars. The crossing from La Tour Fondue takes about 15 minutes. In summer 2025 a return ferry ticket cost around €24; off-season the price drops to €17.70.

Port-Cros became France’s first — and Europe’s first — national marine park on 14 December 1963. It protects roughly 1,700 hectares of land and 2,900 hectares of seabed. On land: dense forest with marked walking trails and no cafés or souvenir shops. Underwater: Posidonia meadows, groupers, and moray eels that have never been fished. The ferry from Hyères port takes about 45 minutes.

Île du Levant is mostly a French military zone; the small civilian section is the village of Héliopolis, one of Europe’s oldest naturist resorts, established in 1931. Ferry from Hyères port.

The ferry operator for all three islands is TLV-TVM (tlv-tvm.com). Up to 20 daily crossings in summer; a single operator, so you can combine islands.

On the mainland: The Giens Peninsula extends south from Hyères, attached to the mainland by a double tombolo — two parallel sandbars, each about 4 km long, enclosing salt marshes in between. The western bar is home to Almanarre beach, a globally recognised windsurfing and kitesurfing spot. The eastern bar has calmer family beaches. Salt marshes between them form the Pesquiers nature reserve.

Town beaches at L’Ayguade and La Capte are within the urban area and convenient for a quick swim.

Relocation and paperwork

Hyères lies within the arrondissement of Toulon, so virtually all administrative dealings for newcomers happen in Toulon (~14 min by train) or via the ANEF online portal. For a full explanation of the French immigration procedures, see the Relocation section.

No slot available at the prefecture? Most applications are now handled through the ANEF portal (anef.immigration.interieur.gouv.fr). If you’re stuck, Toulon’s digital assistance point for foreigners opens on Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons — bring your current residence permit, visa or any previous ANEF correspondence. Working tactics for Var department situations get shared in the chat regularly.

For our community: church, food, doctors

Orthodox church. The nearest parish is the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Toulon (97 rue Centrale, ~25 min by train). Founded in 1928 by Russian emigrants, it now belongs to the Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of the Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople). Services on Sundays and feast days, in Church Slavonic and French. Contact: 07 77 30 50 65 · [email protected].

Groceries. There are no specialised Eastern European shops in Hyères itself, as far as we know. Toulon has better options — ask in the chat for current addresses, since these change.

Russian-speaking doctors. Using the Russe language filter on Doctolib alongside a specialty search is a reliable approach; more guidance in the Directory. Full specialist coverage is available in Toulon.

Sworn translators. Certified translators (traducteurs assermentés) for Russian↔French are listed in the experts’ register of the Cour d’Appel d’Aix-en-Provence.

Villa Noailles and the medieval town

Villa Noailles was built between 1923 and 1927 by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens for art patrons Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles. The preliminary design drew on cubist De Stijl aesthetics — entirely in reinforced concrete, with roof terraces, a cubist triangular garden by Gabriel Guevrekian, and no concessions to tradition whatsoever. Among the guests at the Villa: Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, and Coco Chanel. The City of Hyères bought the villa in 1973; today it is a nationally recognised contemporary arts centre focused on fashion, design and photography, hosting two annual festivals. It is genuinely one of the more unusual things in the region.

The medieval old town (Vieille Ville) climbs the Castéou hill above the palm-tree boulevards. The Porte Massillon medieval gate, the Tour des Templiers (Knights Templar tower), and the Place Saint-Paul with its panorama over the coast are all worth the walk. The streets are too narrow for cars, which makes the whole quarter pleasant to explore on foot.

Neighbourhoods and housing

  • Town centre / Quartier des PalmiersThe flat area around the station. Palm-lined boulevards, the covered market, shops. Convenient and relatively quiet year-round.
  • Old Town (Vieille Ville)Medieval hilltop quarter above the modern town. Narrow lanes, stone staircases, sea views. Atmospheric; little parking.
  • Giens PeninsulaConnected to the mainland by a rare double tombolo. Almanarre beach (world-class windsurfing), salt-marsh nature reserve. Quiet; a 15-minute drive from town.
  • La Capte / L'AyguadeCoastal neighbourhoods with beaches along the Giens bay. Busy in summer, peaceful in winter. More affordable rents.
  • Le Port / Marina quarterBy the marina and the island ferry terminal. Restaurants, yachts, lively year-round.

Hyères is noticeably more affordable than Nice or Cannes. Studios were listed at roughly €450–620/month, T2 apartments at €650–900/month in 2025–2026 listings. In summer the rental market tightens sharply due to seasonal tourism — non-seasonal contracts or direct landlord negotiations tend to give better results. If you lack a French income guarantor, the government-backed Visale scheme (visale.fr) covers the gap. Real listings and neighbourhood opinions live in the chat.

Transport

Train: TER Toulon–Hyères, ~14 minutes, approximately 12 services a day between 06:02 and 21:39. Toulon is the regional transport hub: TGV to Paris in ~3 h 40 min, TER along the coast towards Marseille and Nice.

Buses (Réseau Mistral): Lines 63 and 67 cover the Hyères town centre; line 102 runs to the airport and Toulon (~30 min). A single ticket is €1.40 for any journey within the network.

Toulon-Hyères airport (TLN): ≈3 km from the town centre; buses 63 and 67 reach it in 10–15 minutes. Flights to Paris-Orly (up to 4 daily), Brest, and seasonal leisure destinations. Small and low-stress — a useful asset if you need to travel frequently.

Driving: Parking in Hyères is far easier and cheaper than in Nice or Marseille. Car-free ferries mean you leave the car on the mainland for island trips.

Day trips from Hyères

  • Toulon — ~14 min by train: major naval port, bustling indoor market, prefecture, good specialist doctors.
  • Fréjus — ~1 hour: Roman amphitheatre and aqueduct, next to Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel massif.
  • Marseille — ~1 h 20 min by train via Toulon: France’s second city, OFII office, Eastern European shops.
