Monaco is a separate country: its minimum wage is announced in the Journal de Monaco, and its own funds provide health insurance and pay pensions, so the French SMIC and CPAM do not carry over to a job in Monaco. We at Vibe South of France don’t promise anyone work; jobs wanted and offered go in the community listings. What we have done is gather the figures from the primary sources: the Journal de Monaco, the IMSEE statistics office, the government portals and the social security funds. Everything is public, we checked it on 25 October 2026, and every figure has its source next to it. You can ask about your own case in the “Vibe South of France” community chat on Telegram - Monaco, Nice, Menton and the whole South of France, where there are 700+ members.

What are salaries in Monaco: median, average and by sector?

Half of private-sector employees earn more than €3,475 gross a month, and IMSEE puts it in just those words: “Half of private-sector employees earn more than €3,475 monthly”. The average is higher, €5,195. Both figures are for 2025, published in April 2026, converted to a full-time 169 hours a month, with bonuses and before contributions. This is gross pay, not take-home: IMSEE doesn’t say how much is left after contributions, and neither do we.

Measure, 2025Gross per monthChange on 2024
Median€3,475+4.1% (+€136)
Average€5,195+5.4% (+€265)

Why is the average so far above the median? There is a long tail at the top: 6.2% of employees earn more than €10,000.

What is the minimum wage in Monaco in 2026?

Since 1 June 2026 the minimum wage in Monaco has been €12.31 an hour and €2,080.39 a month for 169 hours for workers over 18, plus a compulsory 5% supplement (Circular 2026-8 of 26 May 2026, Journal de Monaco 8802). The rates without the supplement:

AgePer month (169 hours)Per hourPer week (39 hours)
over 18€2,080.39€12.31€480.09
17-18€1,872.52€11.08€432.12
16-17€1,664.65€9.85€384.15

The key point most summaries miss: these amounts are before the supplement. The circular says the minimum rates “doivent être majorées d’une indemnité exceptionnelle de 5 % de leur montant”, meaning they must be raised by an exceptional supplement of 5%, and no social contributions are deducted from it. By our own calculation, the adult minimum with the supplement is €2,184.41 a month.

How does that compare with France? The hourly rate since 1 June 2026 is the same as the French SMIC, €12.31. But France works out its monthly minimum on a 35-hour week (€1,867.02 gross, more on the page about working in Nice), while Monaco uses a 39-hour week, and adds 5% on top.

How many jobs are there in Monaco, and who does them?

At the end of 2025 Monaco had 77,866 jobs, 0.7% fewer than a year earlier (IMSEE, Employment Observatory 2025). These are jobs, not people: one person can hold several, which is why there are fewer private-sector employees, about 60,000.

IMSEE counts the domestic staff hired by households separately: 2,848 employees, 4.8% of the private sector, almost three quarters of them women. The group covers private secretaries, cleaners, carers, chauffeurs and seamen. We found no hiring rules on the official pages specifically for domestic staff, seasonal workers or yacht crews, so we don’t write about them.

How to find a job in Monaco: how hiring works

In short: the employer arranges the job, not you. The order on the MonEntreprise portal (page updated 16 March 2026):

  1. The employer opens a file with the Service de l’Emploi and submits the vacancy.
  2. Within 4 full days the service sends suitable candidates with priority, and the employer answers on each of them, giving reasons.
  3. If none is chosen, the employer puts forward their own candidate and signs the hiring application with them (Demande d’Autorisation d’Embauchage, DAE).
  4. The employee receives the work permit (permis de travail) and registration numbers with the CCSS (health insurance) and CAR (pension) funds.

The priority list and everything about residence permits are in our guide “Moving to Monaco”. Here we add two points that matter to newcomers. First: as the law firm CMS summarises it (16 July 2026), a non-EEA candidate who lives neither in Monaco nor in France needs a previous working relationship with that employer. Second: if a non-European candidate has no residence permit with the right to work from the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture and will live in Monaco, the portal asks the employer to write directly to the head of the service at emploi@gouv.mc.

Registering with the Service de l’Emploi yourself is not open to everyone. The service’s page (updated 30 April 2024) names Monegasques, their children and spouses, people living in Monaco, and residents of Cap-d’Ail, La Turbie, Beausoleil and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin who have already worked in the principality. Registration runs Mon-Fri from 8:30 to 13:00, and visits are by appointment only.

Are there jobs in Monaco for Russians, and where can I find vacancies?

Monaco has no separate jobs for Russians, Ukrainians or Kazakhs: the government portals do not single out citizens of particular countries and speak only of non-European candidates and the hiring priority list (MonEntreprise, 2026). Jobs wanted and offered go in the community listings. The official channel is the Service de l’Emploi, address and phone below, by appointment only; the service pages we were able to open carry no public list of vacancies.

Can you live in France and work in Monaco?

Most people do exactly that. At the end of 2025, 81.5% of private-sector employees, about 48,000 people, lived in France, 10.1% in Monaco itself and 8.3% in Italy (IMSEE). Within that 81.5%, almost three quarters live in the Alpes-Maritimes outside the neighbouring communes (59.4% of all employees), another 21.4% live in the four neighbouring communes, and only 0.7% live further away than the Alpes-Maritimes.

  • Nicehome to more than 16,000 of Monaco's private-sector employees, 27% (IMSEE, 2025): almost three times as many as the employees who live in the principality itself (5,975)
  • Mentonabout 7,300 of Monaco's private-sector employees, 12.4% (IMSEE, 2025); an employee's family living here stays within CCSS health cover
  • Roquebrune-Cap-Martin4,422 of Monaco's private-sector employees, 7.5% (IMSEE, 2025); one of the four neighbouring communes on the hiring priority list
  • Ventimiglia (Italy)more than 2,300 of Monaco's private-sector employees, 3.9% (IMSEE, 2025); in all, 8.3% of the people working in the principality live in Italy

The largest numbers of people working in Monaco live in Nice and Menton; the table by commune is in our guide to Monaco.

What matters in this arrangement:

  • Papers. Nationals of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland need a French residence permit to live in France, and everyone needs a Monaco work permit, which the employer applies for.
  • Health insurance. The employee is insured by Monaco’s CCSS, with rights opening after 120 hours of work in a month or 200 hours in a quarter. A spouse without a job of their own and the children are insured if they live in Monaco or in the Alpes-Maritimes. So a family in Menton or Nice is covered, but a move to, say, the Var breaks that condition.
  • Tax. The exemption from income tax in Monaco, in the words of the MonServicePublic portal (27 August 2026), applies to people who genuinely live in the principality and does not cancel other countries’ rules. How the income of people living in France is taxed is on the page “Taxes in France”. Monaco’s own taxes (income tax, ISB, VAT, duties, inheritance) are on the page “Monaco taxes”.

At the end of 2025, 7,317 private-sector employees worked remotely. They are required to live in Monaco, France or, since June 2024, Italy, and remote work itself is set up under the framework approved by the Département de l’Emploi (Law No. 1.429 of 4 July 2016). This rule does not provide for working for a Monaco employer from any other country.

What is the pension in Monaco, and how do you get it?

The pension for salaried work in Monaco is paid by the CAR fund (Caisses Sociales de Monaco), and the employee gets a CAR number together with the work permit. The conditions for a direct pension (Caisses Sociales de Monaco, page as of October 2026):

WhatCondition
Serviceat least 10 years and at least 60 months of actual or equivalent work
Age65; from 60 if you have stopped all work and receive no sickness or unemployment benefits; from 55 for a mother who raised at least three children for 8 years each before they turned 16
Point value€22.2700 a year from 1 October 2026
Monthly amountnumber of points × point value / 12
After 65+1.50% for each full quarter, up to +30%, no further increase after 70

We found no average CAR pension in open sources, and we won’t make one up.

There is a minimum pension top-up, but its conditions are strict: a pension for salaried work in Monaco only, at least 450 months (37.5 years) and fewer than 775 points. The top-up equals the point value times the points missing up to 775. By our own calculation, 775 points now come to about €17,259 a year, roughly €1,438 a month, but only the fund can give you the exact amount. Household income counts too: the full top-up is paid if income for 2025, including the twelve top-up payments, is below €21,651.30 for a single person and €31,492.80 for a married couple, and above the threshold the top-up is reduced. The application or renewal goes in every year by 31 October: “before the 31 October of each year or the entitlement lapses”, otherwise the right is lost.

In October 2026 Monaco abolished the former one-off and spouse’s allowances for pensioners and introduced in their place the Social Allowance for Pensioners, with new conditions; check the conditions and amounts with the CAR.

The CAR fund can take periods of work in France and Italy into account to reach the 10 years and 60 months: “these periods may be taken into account to reach the effective ten years and 60 months”. If you have also worked in France, the French part of your record is counted under its own rules, set out on the page “Pension in France”.

Where to apply for work papers in Monaco: addresses and hours

What we didn’t find

So that you don’t look for something here that isn’t here:

  • take-home pay after contributions: IMSEE gives gross figures only;
  • hiring rules for seasonal workers, domestic staff and yacht crews;
  • the average CAR pension;
  • how diplomas are recognised, for doctors for example;
  • a public list of Service de l’Emploi vacancies: the service pages we were able to open have none.

Our chat and working in Monaco

Vibe South of France is a Russian-speaking community on Telegram with 700+ members: Montpellier, Toulouse, Nice, Menton and the whole South of France. To be straight with you: since May 2025 Monaco has come up in 13 chat messages, and not one of them is a practical question about work. We haven’t held a meet-up on the Côte d’Azur yet either.

But since four out of five people working in the principality live in France, our people are easier to find in Nice and Menton than in Monaco itself. In the chat you can ask who already commutes across the border for work, how the permis de travail went and how long the Service de l’Emploi took to answer. Tell us you’re in Monaco or planning to work there, and our people will find you.

Frequently asked questions

What are salaries like in Monaco?
The median private-sector salary in Monaco for 2025 is €3,475 gross a month and the average is €5,195 (IMSEE, April 2026). Both are converted to a full-time 169 hours a month, include bonuses and are before contributions. One employee in five (20.1%) earns between €2,500 and €3,000, and only 0.7% earn under €2,000.
What is the average salary in Monaco?
The average private-sector salary in Monaco in 2025 is €5,195 gross a month, 5.4% more than in 2024 (IMSEE, April 2026). High salaries pull the average up: 6.2% of employees earn more than €10,000. So the median, €3,475, is the better guide: half of employees earn more and half earn less.
What is the minimum wage in Monaco in 2026?
The minimum wage (SMIC) in Monaco since 1 June 2026 is €2,080.39 a month for 169 hours, or €12.31 an hour, for workers over 18, and an exceptional 5% supplement, on which no contributions are paid, must always be added to it (Circular 2026-8, Journal de Monaco 8802). By our own calculation, that comes to €2,184.41 a month with the supplement.
How do I find a job in Monaco?
The employer arranges the job. They file the vacancy with the Service de l’Emploi and get authorisation to hire; you get a work permit (permis de travail) and numbers with the CCSS (health fund) and the CAR (pension fund) (MonEntreprise, 16 March 2026). The service first has 4 full days to put forward candidates with priority. Only some people can register as jobseekers: Monegasques, their children and spouses, everyone living in Monaco, and residents of the four neighbouring communes who already worked in the principality.
Are there jobs in Monaco for Russians, and where can I find vacancies?
Monaco has no separate jobs for Russians, Ukrainians or Kazakhs: the portals single out no nationalities, only non-European candidates and the hiring priority list (MonEntreprise, 2026). Jobs wanted and offered go in the community listings. The official channel is the Service de l’Emploi, 17 rue Princesse Florestine, by appointment only. A non-European candidate without a French permit with the right to work (Alpes-Maritimes prefecture) who will live in Monaco: the employer writes to the head of the service at emploi@gouv.mc.
Can I live in France and work in Monaco?
You can live in France and work in Monaco, and most people do. 81.5% of Monaco’s private-sector employees, about 48,000 people, live in France, most of all in Nice (more than 16,000) and Menton (about 7,300) (IMSEE, end of 2025). Nationals of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland need a French residence document, and everyone needs a Monaco work permit. An employee’s spouse and children are insured with the CCSS if they live in Monaco or in the Alpes-Maritimes.
What is the pension in Monaco?
The pension for salaried work in Monaco is paid by the CAR fund (Caisses Sociales de Monaco, 2026): you need at least 10 years of salaried service, including at least 60 months of actual or equivalent work, and the pension age is 65. The pension is counted in points: the number of points is multiplied by the point value (€22.2700 a year from 1 October 2026) and divided by 12. We found no average CAR pension in open sources.
Is there a minimum pension in Monaco?
The CAR fund pays a minimum pension top-up to people who worked as employees in Monaco for at least 450 months and have fewer than 775 points. The top-up equals the point value times the points missing up to 775 (Caisses Sociales, 2026). Application or renewal must be filed every year by 31 October, or the entitlement lapses. The full top-up is paid if household income for 2025, including the top-up, is below €21,651.30 (single) or €31,492.80 (married couple).
Can I work remotely for a Monaco employer?
You can work remotely for a Monaco employer if you live in Monaco, in France or, since June 2024, in Italy: at the end of 2025, 7,317 private-sector employees worked this way (IMSEE, Employment Observatory 2025). Remote work is set up under the framework approved by the Département de l’Emploi (Law No. 1.429 of 4 July 2016), and that rule does not provide for working from any other country.
