Working in Nice and on the Riviera: permit, SMIC, seasons

We are the “Vibe South of France” community. We have put the rules together from official pages and marked the date on each one, and jobs wanted and offered go in the community listings. First we look at your residence permit, because it decides whether you can work in Nice at all; after that come the money, the seasonal contract and the benefit that follows a season. Can you work in Nice on your permit

Check your document before you send out a single CV. The rules are the same all over France, and Nice is no exception. Next-door Monaco is another matter: work there runs on its own rules, set out on our page Jobs and salaries in Monaco.

The “travailleur saisonnier” card is a case of its own. It runs for several years (up to 3), you may work on it for no more than 6 months a year in total, your permanent home stays abroad, and the seasonal contract must be at least 3 months long. An autorisation is needed for every contract, and you cannot bring your family on this card (F21516, 1 May 2026).

Ukrainians under temporary protection receive an autorisation provisoire de séjour (APS), and it lets them work without a separate permit (service-public F299, version of 11 June 2026, checked by us on 5 November 2026). An EU Council decision of 30 July 2026 extended the protection to 4 March 2028. The APS is also on the list of documents for registering with France Travail (F24465). The employer requests the autorisation de travail, and only online. The confirmation of filing does not let you work, and if the prefecture says nothing for 2 months, that is a refusal. A word on daywork on yachts: it needs the right to work too, so “everyone does it” will not protect you.

What it pays: the 2026 SMIC

On 1 June 2026 the SMIC rose by 2.41%; before that it was €12.02 gross an hour (A18916, 18 May 2026; F2300, 1 June 2026). It is the legal minimum for any adult employee on any contract, seasonal ones included. An employer who pays less risks a €1,500 fine.

Only a few groups can lawfully be paid below the SMIC: minors with under 6 months of experience, apprentices (apprentissage) and people on professionalisation contracts, where the percentage depends on age and diploma. VRP sales representatives have a regime of their own.

We don’t publish salary ranges by job on the coast: we have no dated sample of listings, and an invented figure is one you would check at the interview anyway. There is one benchmark, the SMIC. Average and median pay across France are covered in the guide salaries in France.

Who is hiring in Nice and on the Riviera

The France Travail BMO 2026 survey shows where the work is on the coast. These are not vacancies: employers were asked how many people they plan to hire over the year, seasonal jobs included. France Travail splits the Alpes-Maritimes into employment basins, and the three main ones on the coast look like this (checked on 5 November 2026):

Across France as a whole 32.2% of hiring plans are seasonal, so the coast is clearly more seasonal than average: in Nice and Cannes about four hires in ten are for the season, and for waiters and hotel staff it is two thirds or more (77.3% and 83.8% in Nice).

There is year-round work too. Nice plans to hire 850 home helpers and carers, only 3.5% of them seasonal, and 800 aides-soignants (care assistants, 2.5%); in Cannes, 600 home helpers and carers (8.3% seasonal). The LA CASA basin has 500 hiring plans for IT engineers (ingénieurs R&D en informatique et télécom), not one of them seasonal, and employers rate 78% of them as hard to fill. Seasonal contracts: what works differently

• The term is “until the end of the season”. In hotels, cafés and restaurants (the HCR agreement) a seasonal CDD runs for no more than 9 months. If the contract has no exact end date, it must state a minimum duration (F36, 21 August 2026).
• Prime de précarité, the end-of-contract bonus on an ordinary CDD, is as a rule not paid on a seasonal contract. The exception is where the sector agreement provides for it (F803, 6 October 2026).
• Paid leave builds up at 2.5 working days a month with one employer, which is 30 days for a full year (F2258, 30 April 2026).
• Housing. On a seasonal autorisation the employer shows the prefecture that you will have decent housing for the stay (F2728). If housing is part of the offer, ask for it to be written into the contract.

Benefit after the season

Someone who has worked on seasonal contracts alone becomes entitled to unemployment benefit (ARE) after 5 months: 108 days or 758 hours in the last 24 months, or the last 36 from age 55. That is for contracts that ended on or after 1 April 2025.

The two kinds of contract are not added together. Unédic’s own example: 60 days of a seasonal CDD plus 60 days of an ordinary one make 120 days, but the ordinary rule needs 130, so there is no entitlement. Whereas 120 days of seasonal contracts alone clear the 108-day threshold, and you are entitled. With a mix of contracts the general condition applies: 6 months (130 days or 910 hours) in 24 months.

Since 1 April 2026, 5 months is also enough for people who have never received unemployment benefit, or have not received it for more than 20 years (F38881, 23 July 2026). Register with France Travail no later than 12 months after the contract ends.

France Travail in Nice

The France Travail directory lists five agencies for Nice: Nice Centre, Nice Nord, Nice Est, Nice Ouest and Nice La Trinité. The single jobseekers’ number is 3949. Registration is free, online or at an agency (F1636, 10 October 2025).

You need a valid French document that allows salaried work. Service-public names the carte de résident, “salarié”, “passeport talent”, “vie privée et familiale”, “recherche d’emploi ou création d’entreprise”, the APS and a receipt marked “autorise son titulaire à travailler” (F24465, 21 January 2025). The “étudiant” and “visiteur” cards are not on that list. The “travailleur saisonnier” card does not entitle you to register: it is issued on condition that you keep permanent housing abroad, and R5221-48 excludes documents with such a condition.

We don’t list the addresses and hours of the five agencies here, because they change: open the directory on the France Travail site and find yours.

Where to look for vacancies

• France Travail - the state employment service; vacancies are online on its site.
• Hellowork, Indeed, leboncoin (the Emploi section) - job-ad sites.
• Saisonnier and L’Hôtellerie Restauration - platforms for seasonal work and the hotel trade.
• Knocking on doors. The old way still exists: walk round hotels and restaurants with your CV. We don’t know how often it works, but it costs nothing.

If you are a tour guide

Only the holder of the professional guide-conférencier card may lead tours in museums with the musée de France status and in historic monuments, which matters on the Riviera. To get the card you need a licence (or an equivalent level) and C1 in a foreign language, a regional language of France or French sign language. Without it an individual risks a €450 fine (F38895, 21 February 2026).

Working off the books: what the employer risks

An employer who hires a foreigner without the right to work faces a fine of up to €30,000 per worker and up to 5 years in prison, plus an administrative fine of up to €21,750 (F33886, 1 June 2026). The employer must check that you hold a permit that allows work, or an autorisation de travail, so a question about your document at the interview is the norm, not nitpicking.

Unemployment benefit needs days or hours actually worked: 130 days or 910 hours in 24 months, and for seasonal workers 108 days or 758 hours (see above).

Never pay an employer for a contract, for training or for “frais de dossier”. By law a jobseeker cannot be charged for job placement (L5321-3).
