Kefir in France: where to buy it, what it's called, what to use instead

Yes, kefir is sold in France under the same name, Kéfir, with lait fermenté in small print. Look in the chilled dairy section of any big supermarket. It's milder than ours: to drink, pick a bottle with levures (yeast) in the ingredients; for pancakes and baking, lait ribot or plain lait fermenté will do.

Is there kefir in France, and what is it called?

There is, and the name is almost the same: Kéfir. That word is printed big on the bottle, with lait fermenté in small letters underneath, which means fermented milk: that’s the product’s legal name. The neighbouring shelves hold kefir’s relatives under other names, and in pancakes plenty of them stand in for it with no loss at all.

As printed on the packWhat it isGood for
KéfirKefir. Under the big word, in small print: lait fermenté. Milder than ours, usually 1.1-1.5% fat, and not every brand contains yeastDrinking, if the ingredients include levures or grains de kéfir. Any of them will do for batter and okroshka
Kéfir douxMild kefir. The Carrefour Sensation and Auchan versions have no yeast in them, so it’s really just lait fermentéPancakes, blini, baking. Fine to drink, but milder than ours
Lait fermentéFermented milk with no yeast and no fizz. Going by the ingredients, it’s our prostokvasha (plain soured milk)Blini, pancakes, dough, marinades. For okroshka, thin it with cold water
Lait ribotBreton soured milk with no sugar, usually in a 1-litre bottle. Ingredients: milk and lactic starter culturesPancakes, baking, marinades. The first kefir substitute to reach for in an ordinary supermarket
BabeurreButtermilk, the liquid left over from churning butter. Rare on the shelvesBaking and marinades, if you come across it
Lben, Elben, LabanA North African and Middle Eastern cultured milk drink from the ordinary dairy aisle. No yeast, usually low in fat: Candia Elben has 0.5 g of fat per 100 mlBatter, okroshka, marinades. To drink, it’s an acquired taste
RaïbNorth African soured milk (lait caillé). Traditionally it’s left to set into a gel, and it tastes like unsweetened yoghurtBaking and pancakes
AyranTurkish ayran: yoghurt, water and salt. Sold ready-saltedOkroshka and kholodnik. Less good in baking because of the salt and water
Kéfir de fruits, kéfir d'eauA fizzy drink made with water, sugar and fruit. There’s no milk in itNot a single kefir recipe

Don’t expect French kefir to taste like the kefir back home. Under GOST 31454-2012, our kefir is made only with a starter of kefir grains, with no pure cultures or yeast added, and the fermentation is mixed: both lactic acid bacteria and the yeasts from the grains do the work. The standard explicitly allows for gas from the grain microflora, which is where that familiar prickle on the tongue comes from. French producers print goût frais et doux, “a fresh, mild taste”, on the label, and they mean it.

And all sorts of things are sold as kéfir in France. In 2024 the consumer magazine UFC-Que Choisir found that Beautiful Immunity, Naturalia and Carrefour Sensation make their kefir with lactic acid bacteria alone. At the magazine’s blind tasting, not one of the twelve tasters could tell these “kefirs” apart from ordinary laits fermentés.

Recipes may have changed since then, so below we’ve listed which brands have yeast in their ingredients now.

What does French kefir look like, and which bottle should you pick?

Most often it’s a white plastic bottle of 50 cl or about a litre with Kéfir in big letters, in the chilled dairy section (rayon frais). For drinking, take one with levures (yeast), grains de kéfir or levures de kéfir in the ingredients: that’s the one that tastes closest to ours. If there’s no kefir next to the milk, try the yoghurts; in the Auchan catalogue, drinkable Activia and Beautiful Immunity are listed there.

By our check, Lactel, Kremly, Nestlé I love Kéfir and Activia have yeast in the ingredients. Auchan Kéfir doux and Carrefour Sensation don’t. Just don’t go by the word doux on the pack alone: Lactel promises a mild taste too, and it does contain yeast.

We went by the pack photos in Open Food Facts, so the designs may have changed since. Lactel’s bottle is white, with a green cap and big green letters spelling KéFiR, and Lait fermenté, goût frais et doux written underneath. Nestlé’s “I ♥ kéfir” has blue lettering and a Frais & Doux banner. Carrefour Sensation sells its kefir in a 500 ml carton, and Activia also comes in 4x125 g pots marked à la cuillère: that one you eat with a spoon.

The fat content is lower than you’re used to. Lactel states 1.5 g of fat per 100 ml and carries the words Allégé en matières grasses; Kremly and Nestlé are 1.5%, Auchan Kéfir doux 1.1%. Richer options are drinkable Activia (3.3 g) and the Breton Kerguillet made with organic whole milk, at 3.7 g. Biocoop and Naturalia stock it, and at Monoprix it’s on the shelf marked Par Naturalia. The same Monoprix even turns up sheep’s-milk kefir from Gaborit (Kéfir de brebis, 400 g), and a goat’s-milk one too.

Shake the bottle before opening; the labels say so in as many words: Bien agiter avant emploi, Agiter avant d’ouvrir. If a pack of drinkable Activia looks slightly swollen, don’t panic: its product page says plainly that the live cultures can do that. Once opened, kefir doesn’t keep long. Lactel Kéfir 50 cl gives you two days, Auchan Kéfir doux three, Candia Elben four, Lactel Immunité et digestion five, and Activia asks you to drink it rapidement, as soon as possible. Keep it in the fridge; producers usually say +2 to +6 °C.

Now for the traps. Kéfir de fruits, kéfir d’eau, Kéfruit and anything marked boisson pétillante have nothing to do with milk: they’re fizzy water-based drinks, and on the Auchan website one of them is even filed among the juices. Dessert végétal kéfir au lait de coco is a vegan dessert made with coconut milk. And ayran is a salty yoghurt drink with water. Great for okroshka, but it isn’t kefir.

What can you use instead of kefir, and when doesn’t it work?

For pancakes, blini, baking, dough and marinades, use lait ribot or plain lait fermenté, the same amount as the kefir in the recipe. In batter, kefir’s job is to be soured milk that foams up with bicarbonate of soda, and they do that just as well. For okroshka, the cold summer soup, use ayran or kefir thinned with cold water. The one thing that won’t work is pouring yourself a glass of the kefir you know: lait fermenté has no yeast, and it tastes like prostokvasha, plain soured milk.

  • Oladyi and blini (thick and thin pancakes). Lait ribot (Paysan Breton, Bridel) or any lait fermenté in a 1-litre bottle: Auchan has its own, at Leclerc it’s Délisse, and there are also Candia Elben and Lactel Laban. People bake with lait ribot in France too: Marmiton, for example, has Norwegian sveler pancakes made with 500 ml of it. Has the batter for thin blini come out too thick? Thin it with milk or boiling water, as you normally would.
  • Mannik (semolina cake), sharlotka (apple sponge), pies, loaf cakes. Lait ribot or lait fermenté, same volume. Marmiton has a Gâteau au lait ribot, and next to the lait ribot the recipe adds ou lait caillé, “or soured milk”.
  • Dough for vareniki and pirozhki. Again lait fermenté or lait ribot, one for one.
  • Okroshka and kholodnik (cold beetroot soup). Ayran is an almost ready-made base: thin and already salted, so go easy on the salt in the soup. Suntat Ayran in 250 ml is in the Auchan catalogue under Lait frais, and Anahit in Marseille sells its own Ayran ANAHIT in 0.5 and 1.5 l (plain, lemon and mint) as well as Suntat in 1 l. The swap works the other way round too: a 2016 okroshka-with-ayran recipe on RussianFood says straight out that the ayran can be replaced with kefir thinned with water.
  • Marinade for shashlik (meat skewers) and chicken. Any lait fermenté, lait ribot, ayran or babeurre will do. The French marinate the same way: in a Poulet mariné au lait ribot recipe from a French food blog, six chicken breasts sit in 300 g of lait ribot with honey, paprika and garlic for one to two days.
  • If all you have is milk. For baking, milk with lemon works: a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a glass of milk, then wait about five minutes. That’s how Les Producteurs de lait du Québec suggest replacing buttermilk. It’s an option for batter only.

Lait ribot is worth learning to recognise on sight. Paysan Breton and Bridel make it from milk and lactic starter cultures, with no sugar, and usually sell it in 1-litre bottles. Que Choisir noticed that many shop-bought kéfirs are as alike as two peas to ordinary lait ribot. For pancakes, that’s good news if anything. Babeurre, the French buttermilk, is rare on the shelves: on 6 October a search for the word in the Auchan catalogue didn’t find a single product.

Where the swaps fall down. You can drink lait fermenté, lait ribot or leben instead of kefir, but it’ll be a different drink, with no yeast and no fizz. Ayran is worse in baking because of the salt and water. And kéfir de fruits is no good anywhere you need kefir: there’s no milk in it.

Want to make your own kefir? Naturalia sells a dried starter, Natali Ferment pour Kéfir de Lait (two 6 g sachets, organic): it contains cultures derived from kefir grains, along with yeasts. On the Naturalia website it isn’t in the dairy section but under Farines, Aides à la pâtisserie (flour and baking aids). We haven’t checked whether the chain’s shops in the South have it.

How much does kefir cost in France?

A rough figure for 2026: about €2 a litre, with prices running from €2 to €4. That’s 5 prices from 3 online shops selling Russian food, as listed on the shops’ websites on 17 October 2026, delivery not included. We don’t quote supermarket prices. Shop prices change, so take it as a ballpark rather than a price list.

Where can you buy kefir in the South of France?

The quickest option is an ordinary supermarket: Lactel and Activia are in the Carrefour, Intermarché, Super U and Monoprix catalogues, and Auchan and Carrefour also have their own kefir. In shops with products from the CIS and Eastern Europe, we’ve confirmed kefir in five southern cities: Montpellier, Nice, Marseille, Cannes and Aix-en-Provence.

Montpellier. Épicerie Arménie at 5 rue Anatole France is our community partner: we shop there ourselves, tvorog and kefir included. In September 2026 the owner listed kefir among the shop’s products, alongside tvorog, braided string cheese and pelmeni. Check the brand and fat content when you’re there. We haven’t confirmed kefir in the city’s three other shops; their addresses are on the Montpellier shops page.

Nice. Kefir is available at Ani Mini Market (5 avenue de la Californie) and at Gastronom, also known as Gastronomie Russe (4-6 boulevard Gambetta). Hours and the nearest stops are on the Nice shops page.

Marseille. Kefir is sold at both Anahit shops, at 11-13 boulevard de la Liberté and at 165 boulevard de Pont de Vivaux. The Polish Delicepol (Sklep Polski, 5 place Pierre Roux) lists Piatnica kefir in 400 g, but it wasn’t in stock on 17 October 2026, so check before you go. On 6 October 2026 Anahit’s online catalogue had kefir from brands with Russian names: 33 Korovy 3.5% in 500 ml (in stock) and Moja Semja 2% in 1 l (only a few left). It also listed a milk drink from Zorka Moya in 500 g, labelled “Kefir” as well. We don’t have a separate Marseille shops page yet; the addresses are in our main directory of Russian shops.

Cannes and Aix-en-Provence. In Cannes kefir is sold by Tatiana Epicerie Russe (62 boulevard de la République), in Aix by Sheriff Alimentation (15 cours Saint-Louis). Both are in the directory tables.

In the other cities in our directory, Toulouse and Perpignan included, kefir in Russian shops is still unconfirmed: the websites and the map listings say nothing about it, and nobody has mentioned it in the chat. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Just ask in the chat before you go.

Ordinary chains. Here’s what turned up in the online catalogues on 6 October 2026 (we don’t quote supermarket prices):

  • Auchan: Lactel (50 cl, 495 and 990 ml), Kremly in 500 ml, Nestlé I love Kéfir and its own Kéfir doux in 750 ml;
  • Carrefour: Lactel, including an organic one and the 1-litre Immunité Digestion, plus its own Carrefour Sensation in cartons and pots; Carrefour and Carrefour Market also have Paysan Breton lait ribot and Candia Elben;
  • Intermarché: Activia, Kremly, Alsace Lait and lait ribot under its own Itinéraire des Saveurs label, plus Lactel Mon Kéfir Bio in Drive;
  • Super U, Hyper U and U Express: Activia, Alsace Lait, Lactel Kéfir multivitamine, and among the substitutes Paysan Breton, Bridel and Even lait ribot and Candia Elben;
  • Monoprix: Lactel in 1 l, Nestlé, Activia, Kerguillet and Gaborit sheep’s-milk kefir;
  • E.Leclerc: in the main catalogue, only its own-brand Délisse lait fermenté in 1 l; Nestlé I love Kéfir and Activia turned up in Leclerc Drive, but for stores outside the South;
  • Lidl: its own-brand organic kefir in 500 g, made in Austria (it’s in Open Food Facts, but searching the Lidl website didn’t show it to us);
  • Aldi: Alsace Lait Kéfir nature;
  • Franprix: Beautiful Immunity in 500 ml; Casino: organic lait ribot from Bridel.

These are national catalogues; we didn’t walk the shelves of particular shops in the South. Some Intermarché and Super U items are marked unavailable in the catalogue, and a small city-centre shop may not have everything.

Organic shops. At Biocoop, look for Kerguillet in 1 l. At Naturalia a search for kefir brought up 31 items, among them the same Kerguillet, Andechser in 500 ml and an own-brand kefir, and every product on the site has a Voir les stocks en magasin button so you can check stock at your local shop. At La Vie Claire we found only water kefir, and Picard has no kefir at all: a search of its site on 6 October returned nothing. According to Open Food Facts, a 1-litre Kéfir Kokaz (2.9 g of fat) has been seen at Grand Frais, but we couldn’t find it on the chain’s website, so we can’t vouch for it.

Can you order kefir for delivery in France?

Yes: kefir was in the catalogues of three online shops that we confirmed are trading. Two of them, Katucha and AKHTAMAR, ship it all over France, and neither promises chilled delivery. Anahit delivers its own orders, but only within its zone around Marseille.

Katucha (Metz). 2% kefir in a 1 kg pack. Parcels go by Colissimo anywhere in mainland France, up to 20 kg per order, with delivery priced by weight. The delivery page publishes no rates and mentions no free-delivery threshold (there wasn’t one in the basket on 6 October either). To keep fresh products fresh, the shop sends those orders only on a Monday or a Tuesday, and the site says nothing about insulated packaging or keeping things cold. For scale: on 6 October 2026 a test basket for postcode 34000 (Montpellier) priced a 0.82 kg parcel at €9.50 to a pickup point, and the kefir alone weighs a kilo. We haven’t rechecked those figures since: the site has shut its basket to robots.

AKHTAMAR (Strasbourg). KEFIR 3.5% PREMIUM in 500 g and KEFIR 2% were both in stock on 17 October 2026. The site also showed a 1-litre MELKOVITA as in stock, but on 6 October the basket wouldn’t take it, so an “En stock” label there is worth double-checking. The terms of sale on the site are still an empty template, with nothing on cold packaging or delivery times. The delivery rate on 6 October, from a test basket, was about €5 up to 2 kg, free from €100; the site no longer lets us check those figures. Back then the kefir went into an ordinary parcel for that same €5, without a single word about insulated packaging.

Anahit (Marseille). Ferma kefir 2.5% in 840 g, and 33 Korovy 3.5% in 500 ml. The shop delivers everything, chilled goods included, but when we went through checkout on 6 October Marseille was the only option you could choose. The delivery page names twelve cities with a 10 km radius around each, from Martigues to Nice, and invites people elsewhere to sign up and wait until enough of them are interested. The rate on 6 October was €10 per order, free from €100; these days it only appears after you fill in the delivery form, so we haven’t rechecked it. Anahit doesn’t reach Montpellier or the rest of Occitanie.

At La Maison Russe (Saumur), a search for kefir on 6 October found nothing. Slavmarket (Paris) doesn’t publish prices on its site, orders go only through the pomo.bio marketplace, and the marketplace gives the delivery area as Paris and Île-de-France. And we couldn’t confirm that the online shop Magasin Russe France in Lyon is actually trading.

Our advice is simple. Kefir is in every big supermarket, and by post it travels with no promise of staying cold, so we wouldn’t order it on its own. If you’re putting together a big parcel of buckwheat and other dry goods anyway, adding a couple of packs is fine.

How did we check, and what don’t we know yet?

We checked the shops and chains on 6 October 2026, going through the chains’ catalogues and the Open Food Facts database. The online shops we went back over on 17 October: prices come from their product pages, delivery rates from their delivery pages. The test baskets we used to work out delivery on 6 October can’t be repeated, because the sites have closed them to robots. What we don’t know yet is whether the bottle you want is on the shelf of a particular shop in your town.

The Auchan catalogue opened in full. The Carrefour, Intermarché, Leclerc Drive, Super U and Monoprix websites blocked our requests, so for them, as for Aldi, all we have is product listings from search results: name, brand, size. We checked ingredients and fat content against Auchan’s product pages and Open Food Facts, where shoppers enter the labels themselves. We checked the Russian shops the same day against the SIRENE business register, OpenStreetMap and the shops’ own pages.

There are no supermarket prices here, and that’s deliberate: shelves and promotions change faster than we can check them, and we’d rather not pull numbers out of thin air.

Spotted kefir that isn’t on this list, or know a Russian shop that always has it? Tell us in the chat, and we’ll check it and add it.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy kefir in France?
In any big supermarket, in the chilled dairy section. Lactel and Activia kefir are in the Carrefour, Intermarché, Super U and Monoprix catalogues, and Auchan and Carrefour also have their own “Kéfir doux”. In the South, shops with products from the CIS and Eastern Europe sell kefir too: we’ve confirmed it in Montpellier, Nice, Marseille, Cannes and Aix-en-Provence. Online, in October 2026, Katucha and AKHTAMAR were shipping it across France, but neither promises chilled delivery.
How much does kefir cost in France?
As a rough guide for 2026: about €2 a litre in online shops selling Russian food, anywhere from €2 to €4 (5 prices from 3 shops, taken from the shops’ own websites on 17 October 2026, delivery not included). We don’t quote supermarket prices, and shop prices move, so treat this as a ballpark, not a price list.
What is kefir called in France?
Just that: Kéfir. Under the word, in small print, it says lait fermenté, fermented milk, which is the product’s legal name. The “Kéfir doux” from Carrefour Sensation and Auchan is made with no yeast at all, so for a taste closer to ours, look for levures or grains de kéfir in the ingredients. Next to it on the shelf you’ll find lait ribot and plain lait fermenté: for pancakes and baking they’re every bit as good as kefir.
Can you get kefir in France?
Yes, and it’s easy to find: on 6 October 2026 a search for “kefir” in the Auchan catalogue returned 46 items, though that count included lait ribot, Elben and even plant-based desserts. French kefir is milder than ours, usually 1.5% fat, and some brands contain no yeast at all: in 2024 the magazine UFC-Que Choisir found that Beautiful Immunity, Naturalia and Carrefour Sensation make theirs with lactic acid bacteria alone. For kefir from brands with Russian names, head to a Russian shop: in Marseille, for example, Anahit sells 33 Korovy 3.5%.
What does kefir look like in France?
Most often it’s a white plastic bottle of 50 cl or about a litre with Kéfir in big letters: Lactel has green lettering and a green cap, Nestlé’s “I ♥ kéfir” has blue lettering. There are also 500 ml cartons (Carrefour Sensation) and 125 g pots you eat with a spoon (Activia). Under the word Kéfir, small print says it’s lait fermenté, and the fat content is usually 1.1-1.5%.
