How it came together
On 1 July 2025 a short announcement landed in the chat: “Beach day — Sunday 6 July.” The place: Plage du Couchant in La Grande-Motte; the time: “roughly from 2 pm until sunset”; the format deliberately open-ended — play beach games if you feel like it, play cards, swim, sunbathe, talk, enjoy the summer. There was no real sign-up. The organiser simply asked people to “give us a shout if you’re coming”, just to gauge numbers. As with every community meet-up, nobody collected a cent.
The beach wasn’t picked at random, and the announcement said so outright: “it’s enormous and there’s free parking right next to it.” For a group that arrives by car, some of it with kids, that solves almost everything — nothing to book, no spot to hunt for, no timetable to fit into. Families with children aged 5, 9, 10 and 16 signed up too. The beach is honestly the community’s most family-friendly format: no preparation, and no group pace anyone has to keep up with.
The evening before, the confirmation came through: “All as agreed, folks — tomorrow at 2 pm, the beach: Plage du Couchant, La Grande Motte. Bring whatever you like and a good mood.”
What people brought, and how they found each other
The parking question came back a few more times — the organiser dropped a link to it and confirmed twice: “yes, the parking is free, and the beach entrance is right there”, “it’s a big free car park.” People without a car were picked up on the way: two members carrying a volleyball asked for a lift from the tram stop, “same as last time”.
Everything else was pooled, right there in the chat. “For the picnic — if anyone has a folding table, please grab it” — a table turned up and made it to the sand. One of the members brought karaoke gear, announced in advance: “the beach is going to have a soundtrack — loud and heartfelt.” Swimmers got their own invitation: “Any swimmers in the group? Bring what you need (goggles, tow buoy) and we’ll do an open-water session.”
The sea temperature was checked the neighbourly way rather than from a table: “Water’s warm, I swam yesterday” — followed immediately by an honest caveat: “The water’s warm. But everyone’s idea of warm is their own.” The forecast was cross-checked on Gismeteo just in case.
The meeting point on site wasn’t an address but a landmark of our own: the same stretch of beach as last time, near the beach club — “we were by the little boats that time”.
How the day went
People started arriving around two, and from then on the chat worked like a walkie-talkie. The beach really is vast, so some arrivals couldn’t spot the group at all: “We’re on the beach, we can’t work out how to find everyone either” — “you lot who are on the beach, link up”. The organiser coordinated all this remotely: he had said honestly in advance that he couldn’t be there in person (“I’ll be with you in spirit and in melody”), and the on-the-ground ringleader was one of the members. That’s probably the clearest illustration of how the community works: the thing doesn’t fall apart without one specific person.
What followed was exactly the summer day the whole plan was for: sunbathing, swimming, paddleboards, a picnic around the folding table, karaoke, and dancing right there on the sand. There was even a mini backing-vocal rehearsal for the karaoke night set for 10 July: “come to the beach today, we’ll run through it.” Newcomers turned up too: “I’m new to your group… it’ll be lovely to meet new friends.”
Photos and videos were flowing out of the beach by mid-afternoon, and by evening and late into the night they were being posted by the dozen. That’s when someone spotted the coincidence: “Guys, it’s Kupala Night today… we forgot to jump over a bonfire))))” — the meet-up had been announced as nothing more than a beach day; the holiday theme surfaced after the fact. The next day brought a wave of thank-yous: “Thank you so much for this wonderful day”, “Thanks everyone for a beautiful Sunday by the sea!”, “Thanks for the company, you’re brilliant.” And in the same breath, a spot was proposed for the next get-together.
If you’re coming to the next beach meet-up
Beach days are the lowest possible barrier to entry into the community: free, no registration, no commitment. Write in the chat that you’re coming, park in the free car park by the beach entrance, and find your people. Finding your people is the one genuine difficulty — the beach is big, so message the chat when you arrive and someone will link you up.
Bring whatever you want: food and water, a folding table, a ball or a pack of cards; and if you swim seriously, goggles and a tow buoy — there’s always company for open water. The community is based in Montpellier, and people reach the sea from there both by car and by sharing lifts from the tram. These meet-ups grow out of one another: the beach format came out of the first big weekend trip with an overnight stay, and by the evening of this Sunday the chat was already discussing where to gather next.
