Free yoga in the park — summer 2025 in Montpellier

A mat, the grass and the sunset: in the summer of 2025 a friend of ours — a professional trainer — ran free evening classes for the community on Place de l'Europe. Everything below comes from live chat messages.

How the classes started

Summer 2025 was the moment the chat was only just turning into a community: the barbecue-and-camping weekend happened on 31 May, and by 10 June an announcement for the following evening appeared: “TOMORROW 11.06, Wednesday, 7 pm, Place de l’Europe — a FREE yoga class.” The practice was led by a friend of ours — a professional trainer and a member of the community like everyone else: someone who genuinely lives a healthy life, doesn’t drink, and simply wanted to share what he does. He had been introduced to the chat a few days earlier, on 6 June, as the person who would lead the morning yoga at the beach day on 22 June.

There was no sign-up in the usual sense: “If you’re coming, leave a like under this post.” No forms, no prepayment, no membership card. The barrier to entry was effectively zero: trying it cost nothing, and if the format wasn’t for you, you simply didn’t come back.

Place, time and what to bring

Classes took place on the lawn at Place de l’Europe — the announcement called it, affectionately, “on the grass”. The first one fell on Wednesday 11 June at 7 pm; after that the series settled into a regular rhythm — Tuesdays and Thursdays, same time. The organiser noted that practices ran in the parks of Montpellier both in the morning and in the evening, so early risers had an option too.

The packing list was short, and honest for being short: “A mat. A smile. Fighting spirit.” No special clothing, no equipment of your own, no athletic background required. The programme was described in advance as well: asanas “to suit what you can do”, breathing that clears stress in two minutes, stretching, and personal tips from the trainer — in other words, the class adapted to whoever turned up, rather than the other way round. It ran an hour to an hour and a half and it was free; only towards the end of the series did a line about payment appear — an optional donation, “berries, fruit or nuts are fine too”, with no obligation whatsoever.

How it went

The organiser summed up that first evening the next day: “Yesterday everyone gathered on their mats: breathing, moving, letting go of tension and simply being in the moment” — plus a separate “a huge NAMASTE to everyone who came”. Nobody in the chat gave an exact headcount, so we won’t invent one either: all that survives in the messages is “gathered on their mats”. The response was warm and very recognisable for this community: “So cool — when I’m in Montpellier I’ll definitely come.”

From there the classes found their rhythm: Tuesday and Thursday, 7 pm, mats on the grass. Afterwards people stayed on for tea and conversation — about practice, about meditation, and about the way it changes the shape of an ordinary day. On 22 June the same trainer led the morning yoga at the beach day on Plage du Couchant: “gentle breathing, a pleasant stretch, a few static asanas, a little strength work and, of course, savasana to the sound of the waves”.

On 23 June the chat announced the last classes of the summer, and on 24 June came a short reminder: “only 2 classes left this summer”. The series ended in late June when the trainer left for seasonal work, after which the talk turned to possible online practices. The last confirmed class was Thursday 26 June.

If you’re thinking of joining something like this

Yoga on the grass is a good illustration of how regular meet-ups appear in the community at all: someone is good at something and offers it to the rest, and the community supplies the announcement and the people. Formats like this cost nothing — an optional donation at most — and the schedule lives exactly as long as the person leading it has time and energy for it.

In practice that means: watch the announcements in the chat, bring a mat, arrive without expectations, and if a sign-up is needed at all it’s usually one line — in that series it was enough to message the trainer “I’d like to come to yoga”. And keep in mind that summer classes aren’t confined to a single park: later the same crowd took the yoga out to the beaches, to La Grande-Motte and Carnon, while parks and grass also grow into completely different community formats, such as the spring hike to Montferrand castle.
