Russian shops in Montpellier: addresses, hours, what they sell

Yes, Montpellier has Russian shops: we checked four that are open for business, and none of them is more than 350 metres from a tram stop. Two definitely stock tvorog (farmer's cheese), Épicerie Arménie has kefir, and three of the four are open every day until 22:00.

Checked: 6 October 2026

Two of the shops are a few minutes’ walk from Saint-Roch station, about 200 metres apart: Épicerie Arménie on rue Anatole France (our community partner, we shop there ourselves) and Épicerie Europe de l’Est on rue Rondelet, right across the road from the post office. You’ll find La Belle Russie on boulevard Louis Blanc, a hundred metres or so from the Corum tram stop. Épicerie Victoria is off on its own, on rue Fontenille, and the easy way there is tram line 3 to Arceaux. We checked every address on 6 October 2026. Opening hours, phone numbers and the nearest tram stop are in the cards below.

cakes (medovik, napoleon) (3 Jul 2026)

Addresses, hours and phone numbers checked on 6 October 2026 against the French business register (SIRENE), OpenStreetMap and the shops' own pages. Small shops change their hours, so call before a long trip.

Don't go to these old addresses: Épicerie arménienne Sasoun (2 bis rue Mareschal), closed in 2023; Magasin Russe Montpellier (25 rue Frédéric Peyson), no shop at this address (business register and maps).

Where to buy tvorog, buckwheat and kefir in Montpellier

For tvorog (farmer’s cheese), go to Épicerie Arménie or Épicerie Victoria. For kefir, it’s Arménie. As for buckwheat, we’ll be straight with you: we couldn’t confirm it in any of the four shops. You’re better off picking it up at an ordinary supermarket, or asking in the chat whether anyone has seen it on a shelf this week.

When Victoria opened in July 2025, a post about it went up in our chat, and some of our members went along on the very first day and came back full of praise for the prices. Then at the end of December the shop announced a deal in the chat: buy five packs of tvorog, get the sixth free. At Arménie, alongside the tvorog and kefir, you’ll find braided string cheese, smoked mackerel, pelmeni (Russian dumplings) and khinkali (Georgian dumplings). That’s how the owner described her range in September 2026.

Planning to bake a vatrushka, the round bun with a tvorog filling? In July 2026 the advice in the chat was to buy ready-made yeast dough and tvorog. Dough for pirozhki (small filled buns) has been spotted at La Belle Russie, and that’s also where people go for medovik (layered honey cake) and napoleon cake. They have smoked fish and caviar too. For kolbasa, the Russian-style sausage, try rue Rondelet: back in July 2025 people in the chat recommended the same shop for dried squid and fish. Victoria sells lavash flatbread and pickles.

In an ordinary supermarket, go by the French names. The closest things to tvorog are faisselle and fromage blanc. Brousse and recuite are made from whey, so they’re only partly similar. The buckwheat we cook at home is labelled sarrasin grillé or kasha on the packet, meaning toasted. Plain sarrasin décortiqué, without the word grillé, is hulled but not toasted. Carrefour, for example, sells Sarrasin Grillé Kasha from Jardin Bio étic. The kefir at Carrefour and Auchan is mostly Lactel (Auchan also has its own brand): the pack says Kéfir in big letters, and the line with the official product name says lait fermenté. Just don’t grab kéfir de fruits by mistake. That’s a fizzy drink with no milk in it.

If the nearest shop is a long way off

If you live closer to Nîmes, Béziers or Perpignan, you don’t need to come into Montpellier at all: Nîmes and Béziers have two verified shops each, Perpignan four and Avignon one. Addresses and hours are in our directory of Russian shops across the South.

For online orders, Katucha in Metz ships anywhere in France by Colissimo, up to 20 kg per order. On 6 October 2026 we filled a basket on their site for postcode 34000, without paying for anything, just to see what delivery would cost. A 275 g pack of tvorog costs €2.40, and getting it to you costs €7.25 to a pickup point or €10.50 to your door. An 800 g pack of buckwheat is €3.69. Shipping one pack costs €9.50, while twelve packs (nearly 10 kg) come to €16.25. So ordering one pack at a time doesn’t pay, and it makes sense to stock up in one go. A 1 kg pack of 2% kefir is €1.99.

Katucha sends fresh food by regular Colissimo on Mondays and Tuesdays only, and there isn’t a word on the site about insulated packaging. Frozen food doesn’t get posted at all: pelmeni and vareniki (stuffed dumplings) can only be collected in Metz or delivered locally around it.

AKHTAMAR in Strasbourg charges €5 for delivery up to about 2 kg and €10 from 2.4 to 9.6 kg, with free delivery over €100. Buckwheat and kefir are in the catalogue, tvorog isn’t, and the site doesn’t spell out delivery terms, timings or how chilled goods are kept cold. Anahit in Marseille currently delivers within Marseille only, so it doesn’t reach us.

How we checked this list

On 6 October 2026 we checked every address against three sources: the SIRENE business register (is there a shop registered at this address?), OpenStreetMap and the shop’s own page. Then the whole list went through a second, independent check. According to the register, the La Belle Russie sign has hung on boulevard Louis Blanc since 2007, although the company behind it changed in 2021. Épicerie Europe de l’Est has been trading on rue Rondelet since 2014.

Two places from old directories and maps no longer trade, so don’t waste a trip on them:

  • Épicerie arménienne Sasoun, 2 bis rue Mareschal: closed at the end of 2023 according to the register, marked as closed on maps, and the address is now a bakery.
  • Magasin Russe Montpellier, 25 rue Frédéric Peyson: marked as closed on Google Maps, and no food shop has ever been registered at this address.

Noticed that a shop has moved, changed its hours, or has something on the shelves we haven’t listed? Tell us in the chat and we’ll check again and update the page.
